Stepping on the scale often feels like a trial, and with good reason: it can be a harsh critic. A scale never offers words of encouragement like, “You’re doing great!” or “Your hard work is paying off!” Instead, it simply presents a number that can overshadow all your efforts. It doesn’t acknowledge that fluctuations can arise from water retention, hormonal changes, or muscle gain. In that split second, it can fuel negative thoughts, making you feel like you’re failing, even if you’ve made significant strides.
Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows this scenario all too well. You decide it’s time to shed some pounds, and you dive into a rigorous routine. You resist the temptation of fast food, trying to convince yourself that those bland banana and egg white pancakes are a worthy substitute for your favorite treats. You exercise more in two weeks than you have in the past two years, fully committed to your goal.
Then comes the moment of truth when you step on the scale, mentally preparing yourself to see the results of your hard work. You might even take extra steps, like using the restroom beforehand, removing heavy clothing, and holding your breath to avoid any “extra” weight from inopportune sources. And what do you get? Often, a disappointing number that doesn’t reflect your efforts, leaving you frustrated and wanting to give up entirely.

For me, it was exhilarating to navigate between two clothing racks without knocking anything over. Or being able to open my car door fully in a parking lot without fearing I’d hit another vehicle. These may seem trivial to some, but they were significant milestones in my journey.
The scale can’t capture when your clothes start fitting better, when you can ascend stairs without feeling winded, or when you can simply bend down to tie your shoes without a struggle. It doesn’t account for improvements in your cholesterol levels or the increased energy that allows you to enjoy activities with your kids, like playing in the park or even sitting comfortably in a swing.
Your weight is just a number, but your overall health, happiness, and self-esteem are far more important measures of success. If those are the things you genuinely want to improve, why let a number dictate your progress? Forget the scale.
