My Journey Before:
I believed in self-love and confidence, striving to prioritize my well-being. However, like many mothers, I often neglected my health, skipping annual checkups and follow-ups. Unbeknownst to me, I was quietly developing Type 2 Diabetes.
Throughout the previous year, I experienced what I thought were severe panic attacks, which seemed to strike without warning. Whether I was shopping, driving, or dining, I’d suddenly feel dizzy, anxious, and my heart would race uncontrollably. As the fear of these episodes grew, I found myself living in a constant state of anxiety.
My cognitive clarity began to wane, and I brushed off alarming symptoms. Tingling fingers? Just slept awkwardly. Feeling strange after dessert? Maybe my taste for sweets had changed. Headaches after exertion? Perhaps I needed to hydrate more. By mid-afternoon, I felt drained and thought an early bedtime would suffice.
This cycle continued until November 2017, when I decided it was time to get tested. The results left me stunned: my doctor informed me that I had dangerously high Type 2 Diabetes. My A1C was a shocking 11, with an average glucose level exceeding 300—these numbers are alarmingly high, often described as “slow motion suicide.”
Ignoring my health had serious consequences. I thought my choices were healthy, but I was fueling my body with the wrong foods and disregarding its warning signs. The panic attacks stemmed from my perilous blood sugar levels. Everything began to make sense—the brain fog, the erratic symptoms.
Upon speaking with the pharmacist, I learned it would take some time for my medication to arrive. Determined to take control, I changed my diet immediately, taking a proactive step while waiting for the insulin. A health-savvy friend recommended a specific eating plan to help reverse diabetes and emphasized the importance of walking—lots of walking.
I began this new dietary approach the very next day. To my astonishment, my blood sugar levels started to drop significantly. Within a week, they had returned to the normal range. The brain fog lifted, and the panic attacks ceased. I felt revitalized and more like myself. My specialist was thrilled with my progress—no medication needed, just encouragement to maintain this new lifestyle.
My Journey After:
There’s no definitive “after” for me; it’s an ongoing process. I continue to embrace self-love and care for my body, but now I do it the right way. With a focus on nourishing foods and regular walking—whether with friends, my kids, or alone—I’ve cultivated a fulfilling lifestyle.
Recent lab results astounded my specialist, who could hardly believe the drastic improvements. My new tests indicated no signs of diabetes, although I will always be categorized as diabetic. There’s no cure, only a reversal, so I remain vigilant about my food choices.
I am proud to have reversed my Type 2 Diabetes in a remarkably short time. I’m on a path toward healing and hope that eventually, I can relax some of my dietary restrictions. For now, I celebrate the positive additions to my life: quality time with friends outdoors, newfound healthy recipes, and an active family life. This sustainable lifestyle change has enriched my existence.
While I appreciate the congratulations on my diabetes reversal, please refrain from making it about weight loss. My worth isn’t defined by my size. The transformation isn’t about numbers on a scale but rather about taking responsibility for my health and well-being. I may occupy less space now, but my pride lies in my improved health.
It’s important to note that I still fall into the “overweight” category, and while I’ve lost weight, I don’t want to focus on how much. My priority is my overall health and happiness—not a specific weight. I am not on a diet; I consume real, nourishing foods that enhance my well-being and avoid those that don’t.
The takeaway from my experience is this: if you’re experiencing symptoms you’ve been ignoring or feel that something is off, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor. You can’t address an issue you’re unaware of.
Cherish your body and practice self-love, but remember that part of that love involves listening to your body and prioritizing your health. I failed to do that before, but now I’m committed to making myself a priority.
