This year, we welcomed a kindergartner into our family, and she has been eagerly anticipating this moment her entire life. As a result, she puts in considerable effort to maintain her composure throughout the school day. However, the instant she hops off the bus, it’s as if a dam bursts, and a flood of emotions pours out—aimed at me and anyone else nearby.

I completely understand. She’s worn out. She’s learning new things. She trusts me enough to share her feelings. Holding it all together in public is challenging even for adults, let alone a child. But the sheer volume of emotions can be overwhelming, and as a perfectly imperfect human being, I sometimes feel like I’m taking a beating.

As the noise levels rise, sibling wrestling intensifies, and dinner arguments escalate to decibel levels that could alarm the neighbors, we parents strive to stay calm and collected. We breathe deeply. We meditate. We attempt every calming technique imaginable.

But let’s be honest: sometimes we just don’t succeed. This is part of being human. It’s how our children learn that, yes, if they push the right buttons or whine at the right pitch long enough, they can make anyone lose it.

When my frustration mounts, I typically issue a warning. I tell my kids, “If you keep that up, I might just snap.”

More often than not, they ignore the warning. I can feel my patience waning. I aspire to be a calm, collected person who navigates emotions gracefully, but oh my goodness, they can be exasperating.

So, I try again, raising my voice just a notch, perhaps letting go of a tiny bit of that chill vibe.

And yet, they persist.

That’s when the inevitable happens: I snap. Like a brittle twig or a stretched rubber band, I unravel.

Once that snap occurs, it’s as if I unleash a whirlwind of chaos. I’m a storm of frustration, and I really let it flow.

Depending on the day, how much sugar I’ve consumed, and the emotional state I’m in, I might even channel my inner Fiona Gallagher.

Children scatter. They might even call their grandparents for an emergency pickup.

After a few moments, I gather myself. Calmness returns. The kids cautiously peek out of their rooms, and we attempt to process what just transpired.

“What on earth just happened?” I ask.

They promise to do better. “We’ll be nice. We’ll clean up after ourselves. No more annoying buzzing sounds.”

And for about five minutes, it seems like progress is made until, inevitably, it spirals back into chaos.
