Who Needs a Partner When You Have a Dog?

I affectionately refer to our golden retriever, Max, as the “Post-Divorce Pup.” My children and I rescued him from the local animal shelter just one month after finalizing my divorce.

Max was around a year old—thin, timid, and sporting a bandaged tail that wagged hesitantly against the cold floor of his kennel. We had considered a few other options, including a charming beagle named Daisy, but when Daisy snapped at one of my kids, I decided to check out the quieter corner where Max sat. I said to my kids, “What about this sweet boy over here?”

Once we took him out to play, he bounded around with my children, feigning interest in a squeaky toy (which he has ignored ever since). Then, he ambled over to me, settled at my feet, gazed up, and let out a deep sigh. That moment sealed the deal.

Max came home with us that evening, and he has been my steadfast companion ever since. He comforted me during those lonely weekends when the kids were with their father, coaxed me outdoors for exercise year-round, and reminded us all that love can be unwavering, even when we questioned it.

For over a decade, Max has dutifully protected us from squirrels and rustling leaves. Although I sometimes wonder whether he’d choose us or an open bag of treats, he truly feels like an integral part of our family.

As we completed the adoption paperwork, a neighbor who was also adopting that day stopped to chat. He remarked, “Every child should have a dog,” and I smiled, thinking maybe every divorced woman could use one too.

Here’s to Max: the ultimate foot-warmer, joy-bringer, and couch potato in our lives. Recently, I shared a tribute to my furry hero on social media, inviting others to post pictures of their own “Divorce Dogs” (or cats!). The response was overwhelming!

Looks like Max isn’t alone in bringing joy to families. To explore more about family dynamics and relationships, check out this insightful article from Modern Family Blog.

In conclusion, the companionship of a dog can provide emotional support, joy, and unconditional love, especially during challenging times like divorce. These furry friends remind us that we are never truly alone.
