Actress Lisa Tran, who recently became a mom to twin boys through gestational surrogacy, candidly shared her experiences with postpartum depression. In an interview, she expressed feelings of “immense guilt” for not being able to carry her own children, highlighting the emotional complexities that can accompany motherhood.
Despite welcoming her sons in October, Tran faced postpartum depression, a reality that some may underestimate for non-birth parents. “Motherhood is the hardest job,” she emphasized, noting that the journey can be filled with unexpected challenges. “No matter how much you prepare, you can never predict what will happen. There are moments of joy, but also times filled with anxiety and sadness.”
Postpartum depression, part of a group of disorders known as perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, can stem from various factors, including hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and overwhelming stress. Tran recounted her own struggle, recalling a postpartum form she filled out where she admitted to feeling “not very happy” and dreading each day.
The premature birth of her twins added to the emotional strain. A COVID-19 scare led to their early arrival and a two-week stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which she described as “heartbreaking.” Thankfully, both her babies are doing well now, and Tran is currently cherishing their eight-month milestones as they begin to crawl and explore.
During a recent period when her husband, Tom Lee, was busy filming his upcoming project, Tran took on the bulk of parenting responsibilities. “It was tough, but I managed,” she said, joking about needing a solo vacation after those exhausting weeks.
As Tran continues to navigate motherhood, she’s choosing to be selective about her work, contemplating whether the demands of a project are worth the effort of taking her family along. She advises fellow parents to stay adaptable, acknowledging that every day brings new experiences and lessons.
