From a Texan: We Are Most Certainly Not Alright, Alright, Alright Because Abbott Is a Disaster

Hello from Texas—the land of BBQ, bluebonnets, and Matthew McConaughey. You need to check on us because we are absolutely not alright, alright, alright.

Recently, Governor Greg Abbott announced an Executive Order that lifts the mask mandate in Texas and allows all businesses and facilities to operate at full capacity starting March 10th. That’s right—everything is open. No masks required anywhere. How sensible! Abbott believes that each individual can decide for themselves about social distancing or wearing a mask, even as new variants are spreading throughout the state! Just in time for Spring Break, right? This seems entirely reasonable and definitely not rushed!

So, congratulations, Texas—you can now gather in large groups, party it up, and spread a deadly virus instead of experiencing the mild inconvenience of caring for others or wearing a simple face covering—all in the name of freedom and liberty!

Did I somehow miss the announcement that COVID has been magically wiped out? Nope, that didn’t happen. The virus is still a major concern, with Texas averaging over 200 reported deaths daily this past week. Since the pandemic began, there have been 2.6 million reported cases in our state. As of this week, less than 7% of Texans are fully vaccinated.

BIPOC communities, especially Hispanics and Texans of color, have been hit the hardest by this pandemic. But who cares about them, right? I need to rush to that arcade!

Abbott has faith that Texans can act responsibly. Really, Greg? These are the same folks who proclaim, “I’m not living in fear!” but will still strap on a gun to go grocery shopping. Just recently, a man accidentally shot himself in a rather delicate area while shopping. A reminder that Texas is a unique state where speed limits can reach 85 mph—yes, that’s correct!

In Texas, we even had a woman banned from Walmart for riding an electric shopping cart while sipping wine from a Pringles can at 9 AM. Okay, maybe that’s not the best example—she’s a mood!

Could this decision be an attempt to distract from Abbott’s significant failures during the recent winter weather crisis, which left millions of Texans without power? Some still lack water, but hey, you won’t need a mask while waiting for essential supplies! Thanks, Governor!

Abbott cites declining COVID numbers, but he neglects to mention that accurate measurements have been tricky lately because we had no electricity, water, or testing facilities open. This makes absolutely no sense!

Before this announcement, Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, along with other Democratic leaders, urged Abbott to keep the mask mandate, arguing that it was too early to lift it and could harm the progress made against the virus. Their legitimate concerns were disregarded.

Former U.S. Representative Bella O’Reilly, a potential challenger for governor in 2022, went further, stating on social media that Abbott’s decision is essentially a death warrant for Texans. Wow, go off!

Fortunately, a growing number of Texas businesses and restaurants disagree with Abbott’s reckless announcement and plan to maintain their safety measures. Many of us are relieved to see this. While I empathize with affected businesses (including my own), it’s clearly not time to ease restrictions or abandon masks. The majority of thoughtful Texans will continue to follow science, not the governor’s agenda. They will adhere to CDC guidelines by limiting capacity, enforcing mask-wearing, providing digital menus, and ensuring hand sanitizing stations are available. By taking these precautions, wearing masks, and waiting until most Texans are vaccinated, we can all hopefully be alright, alright, alright—especially if we can get a new governor in 2022.
