5 Reasons I Sometimes Wish My Partner Would Disappear for a Bit

In our household, evenings are often a delightful mix of exhaustion and cozy companionship. We might find ourselves on opposite couches, sharing knowing glances as we watch the same show, perhaps occasionally passing the popcorn bowl. It’s all very idyllic, but you know what makes it even sweeter? Those rare nights when my husband has to be away for work. It turns out, I appreciate him even more when he’s not around!

Interestingly, research published in the journal Social Forces supports my feelings. The study suggests that a wife’s quality of life can actually improve when her husband spends extra time at work. And let’s face it, we all know the saying, “A happy partner leads to a happy home.” So really, it’s a win-win situation!

Here are five reasons why, despite my deep love for my husband, I cherish those nights alone:

  1. A Bed Just for Me
Oh, how I envy the simplicity of Lucy and Ricky’s separate beds! No more wrestling for covers or dealing with a warm leg draped over me. I can stretch out, surrounded by fluffy pillows, with the thermostat set to a perfect 69 degrees—not 67! And let’s not forget, my bed won’t smell like leftover takeout! Sometimes, a breath of fresh air is just what I need.
  2. Timely Bedtime Routine
When it’s just me, the bedtime ritual becomes a lot more straightforward. “Time to wash up” doesn’t turn into “Let’s go outside and play” or, worse, “WRESTLE!” It’s a fast track to brushing teeth, washing faces, and settling down with a book by 8:30 p.m. (or ideally 8:00, though I can’t always manage that solo).
  3. Dinner Delights
Forget heavy meals! My kids are perfectly content with breakfast for dinner—think eggs, toast, or cereal with apples. It’s simple, clean, and mess-free. And of course, we can’t forget dessert; ice cream, anyone?
  4. My Favorite Shows
Unless it’s one of those rare “quality nights” together, our TV tends to be dominated by sports. If I sneak off to watch something more my style, like Bravo, he always seems to wander in and switch it back to sports. Not my cup of tea!
  5. Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
A little time apart allows me to appreciate my husband even more when he returns. It’s all about balance, right?

So, when’s the next business trip, dear?
