Why has there been a surge in categorizing mothers? Every mom I know seems to proudly embrace some parenting label. Whether it’s Natural Parenting, Attachment Parenting, Gentle Parenting, or Homeschooling Mama, it feels like we’re all trying to fit into neat little boxes. But why? And more importantly, why do I feel like I don’t belong?
It’s akin to shopping for jeans. I can try on a hundred pairs, yet none fit perfectly. Some hug my curves but don’t accommodate my waist, while others are too short for my legs. It’s a maddening experience. The same goes for these parenting labels. Am I out of sync? Are these other mothers simply adhering to guidelines from a book to fit a category?
Am I Doing It Wrong? Where Do I Fit?
I breastfeed exclusively, so I guess I’m a natural parent. I co-sleep, so maybe I’m an attachment parent. My kids come from different fathers, which might label me as a “trashy mama.” My partner and I are not married, so that must make me an alternative mom. But hold on! I also discipline my older children with spankings, own firearms, gifted my six-year-old a classic Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, lose my temper, shout at my kids, and even occasionally sob in the shower. I might even surprise them with a water hose while they’re playing outside. I take them to church sometimes and adore the scent of their sweat after a long day of play.
Whatever happened to simply being a mom? This clique mentality feels like high school all over again. I never fit in then, and I don’t want to now. I’m raising my kids my way, and they’re turning out pretty darn amazing, so I refuse to believe I’m doing it wrong. Chances are, neither are you.
