Don’t Separate My Family From Our Pit Bulls

As a parent of two children aged 13 and 10, my husband and I have built a loving home that includes our two American Staffordshire Terriers, commonly referred to as pit bulls. These dogs are not just pets; they are integral members of our family. They engage in playtime with us, cuddle during movie nights, and share a cozy spot in our beds at night. Their presence enriches our lives immeasurably.

The potential implementation of breed-specific legislation (BSL) poses a significant threat to our family unit. Such laws could mandate the relocation or even euthanasia of our beloved pets, robbing us of two of the most affectionate dogs we’ve ever known. BSL is designed to impose restrictions or outright bans on specific dog breeds based solely on their physical traits, with its severity varying by location. For instance, a law in Montreal, which has been temporarily suspended, proposed drastic measures such as the mass extermination of shelter pit bulls and placed burdensome regulations on current owners, including criminal background checks, hefty fees, and requirements for muzzling dogs during walks. These measures would severely diminish our quality of life.

Unfortunately, pit bulls often face stigma much like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers faced in previous generations. This unwarranted negative image frequently leads to BSL targeting them as “dangerous” breeds, which is a gross misunderstanding.

As someone who has fostered pit bulls in addition to raising my own, I can confidently assert that these dogs possess diverse temperaments, each with a unique personality. All of them are among the most loyal, trusting, and loving animals you could ever meet. BSL, like the one proposed in Montreal, would have unjustly condemned our sweet foster dogs and rescue pups before they had a chance to find their forever homes, all due to ignorance and biased perceptions.

This ignorance is pervasive. Friends and acquaintances have questioned my judgment in allowing my children to interact with such “dangerous” dogs. Contrary to this misconception, our pit bulls have contributed love, laughter, and joy to our lives.

Every one of these dogs has faced neglect or abuse, yet they have all come to us with open hearts, ready to be part of our family. For instance, Bella, one of our fosters, taught us about forgiveness. Despite her traumatic past, she shows unconditional love to everyone she meets. Similarly, Max, born with severe physical challenges, has taught us compassion. Rather than viewing him through the lens of his limitations, we see him as a loving and happy member of our pack.

Our experiences with these dogs have shattered stereotypes and reinforced the idea of unconditional love, reminding us to treasure the simple joys of life: companionship, safety, and warmth. There’s nothing menacing about them—except perhaps their penchant for cuddling.

It’s crucial to recognize that dangerous dogs exist in every breed. Typically, their aggressive behavior stems from irresponsible or abusive ownership—such as neglect, improper training, or using dogs for criminal activities. Blaming a specific breed does not address the root of the problem.

Research shows that breed-specific legislation is ineffective in reducing dog bites or enhancing public safety. The Humane Society of the United States has stated, “Experts agree that BSL and similar policies that restrict dogs based on appearance do not reduce dog bites in communities.” In fact, BSL tends to exacerbate the situation by fostering fear and making certain breeds more appealing to those with malicious intent. The resources allocated to enforce such laws could be better spent on robust enforcement of existing animal welfare regulations, such as leash laws and anti-dog fighting legislation.

To truly protect our communities, we must focus on holding irresponsible dog owners accountable rather than punishing entire breeds. Those who mistreat their pets or train them to be aggressive are the real threats—not the dogs or the loving families who care for them.

Let’s advocate against discrimination, resist breed-specific legislation, and work towards a more compassionate understanding of all dogs. Stand up for responsible pet ownership, and perhaps consider learning more about options for home insemination, as discussed in our other blog post on at-home insemination kits or check out this comprehensive resource on pregnancy.

In summary, we must protect our families, including our furry members, and ensure that legislation does not tear us apart. Advocate for education and compassion, and maybe even share a hug with a pit bull—they’re guaranteed to brighten your day.
