As you embark on your middle school journey, here are some vital insights I want you to hold onto:

  1. Not everyone will understand you. Patience is key; your true friends will come along.
  2. Regardless of your athletic abilities, determination will be your greatest asset.
  3. When you run, remember that you have an angel watching over you.
  4. Friendships aren’t just about quantity; genuine ones are the ones that endure.
  5. Don’t underestimate the importance of deodorant.
  6. It’s perfectly fine for girls to be “just friends” right now; you’re too young for serious relationships. The right ones will appreciate your shyness.
  7. Humility is challenging, but it’s essential.
  8. Be confident in yourself. Embracing your strengths is not the same as being cocky.
  9. Face-to-face conversations are more meaningful than text messages.
  10. Adolescents can be quirky, and you’re almost one of them—embrace it; it won’t last forever.
  11. If someone is hard to hear, don’t hesitate to kindly ask them to speak up.
  12. Referring to adults as “sir” or “ma’am” is a sign of respect, especially as a military child. Remember to be quiet during the National Anthem, face the flag, and remove your hat.
  13. Maintain good dental hygiene—brush your teeth regularly.
  14. Mixing plaids with stripes is an option, but if you choose to do so, wear it with confidence.
  15. Bed-head can sometimes be a style choice, but it shouldn’t be your go-to look!
  16. Seek out that kid sitting alone and invite them to join you.
  17. Making eye contact will become easier the more you practice.
  18. Dance like nobody’s watching.
  19. Laughing at yourself is charming, but being overly self-critical isn’t.
  20. Acknowledge your mistakes. Learn from them; we all have made errors along the way.
  21. Forgiveness is a powerful gift to yourself and others.
  22. Always support your teammates, especially when they seem down.
  23. Chew with your mouth closed. While ketchup may enhance many foods, it can be messy—use a napkin.
  24. Remember to wash your PE clothes more than once a week. Nobody appreciates a smelly kid.
  25. Trust that God has a grand plan for your life.
  26. Be true to yourself. Trying to be someone you’re not is, ironically, very uncool. Unique individuals often change the world.
  27. Kindness is invaluable.
  28. Hold doors open for others, and always say “please” and “thank you.” Consider using “you’re welcome” instead of “no problem” as a way to show that helping others is a privilege. Develop a strong handshake, but make sure it’s not too firm or too weak.
  29. Pray regularly.
  30. When feeling down, look up—there’s always hope.
  31. Engage in reading, drawing, listening to music, and playing outside. Devices can make you a bit dull; unplug and enjoy the world around you.

In the end, my dear Alex, know that you are perfectly crafted, even in your imperfections. Mistakes will happen, and you will face challenges. Yet, you will also rise above them and grow stronger. We are here to guide you every step of the way, providing support and love.

I hope that one day you reflect on these formative years and recognize the potential we see in you.

With love,
Mom
