Entering the fitness world later in life has been an interesting journey for me. In my younger years, I took my fast metabolism for granted, indulging in whatever food and drink I pleased without a thought of hitting the gym. Occasionally, I would brave the treadmill and high-energy aerobics classes, but I always opted to change at home to avoid the dreaded locker room. After all, modesty is key when it comes to the female anatomy.
Once I became a mom in my 30s, my body underwent significant changes, especially after two C-sections that left my abdominal muscles in disarray. Running became a challenge, thanks to my newly acquired, um, assets. With two active toddlers to chase after, I knew I had to commit to fitness, and that meant changing at the gym instead of at home.
Around the age of 40, something shifts in women, and suddenly, the concerns about modesty in locker rooms seem to evaporate. Perhaps it’s the experience of exposing yourself to medical personnel during childbirth or the nonchalance of breastfeeding in public while managing a toddler, but women over 40 develop a sense of freedom when it comes to nudity.
In a bustling women’s locker room, you’ll find a colorful array of confident women, unabashedly discussing everything from recipes to the latest episodes of popular reality shows, all while completely naked. There’s a certain sisterhood that forms, and if you’re new to this scene, it can be quite overwhelming to navigate without letting your gaze wander.
A few years back, I went to my local gym for a swim, hoping to escape from my rambunctious kids while my husband handled bedtime. As I tried to perform some awkward towel dance to get into my swimsuit, I encountered a woman in her 60s who strolled out of the shower, completely unbothered by her nudity. We exchanged a few polite words, but her level of comfort was something I could hardly comprehend.
She clearly had no reservations about being bare. This woman, who had clearly mastered the art of locker room audacity, proceeded to towel off with vigor, making me wish the ground would swallow me whole. After her thorough drying session, she unveiled a massive jar of Vaseline to moisturize every inch of herself—no area left unattended. I was torn between horror and intrigue as she chatted about her grandson’s birthday party while casually tending to her skin.
By the time she nonchalantly closed her locker with the same hand that had just been in, let’s say, an inappropriate place, I felt like I had experienced a slow and painful demise. I vowed never to go near Locker No. 17 again.
While I am gradually embracing my 40s and all that comes with it, I still find myself hesitating to join the ranks of those fearless women. Maybe one day I’ll feel that liberating sense of freedom in the locker room, but for now, I’ll keep my modesty intact—and reserve any more personal grooming for a private bathroom stall. Trust me, no one wants to witness that level of freedom.
