As a child, I created unforgettable memories at Panama City Beach, Florida, during the ‘90s. Back then, it was a vibrant hub for teens filled with quirky souvenir shops, lively amusement rides, and sun-kissed groups of kids congregating on the shore. My friends and I would don our matching airbrushed T-shirts and wander the powdery white sands in search of fun, our spiral perms bouncing with every step, and our lips glistening with Dr. Pepper-flavored lip gloss.
I may not remember all the faces from those days, but one character stands out—a guy in a Speedo, confidently strolling the beach, sun-kissed skin shimmering with baby oil, and a highlighted mullet blowing in the breeze. He’d flash us a smirk, pausing only to adjust his suit before continuing on into the sunset.
On the last night of that trip, with a mix of nerves and excitement, I called out, “Hey! Speedo Guy!” as I lifted my camera for a snapshot.
Years later, that picture still captures the essence of Panama City Beach in my mind. However, I was surprised to find that PCB had transformed while I was busy growing up, getting married, and raising my kids. The old motels were replaced with modern high-rise condos, and the cheap thrill rides evolved into upscale shopping centers and seafood eateries. With the opening of an international airport in 2010, tourists from across the globe flocked to this stunning destination. When I returned with my family last fall, Panama City Beach completely captivated us. We loved it so much that we decided to visit again this year!
Now, what draws me to Panama City Beach is the beautiful white sands and crystal-clear emerald waters. There’s truly something for everyone here, catering to all interests and budgets. Check out this list of our favorite activities in Panama City Beach, and you’re sure to have the beach vacation of a lifetime.
Accommodations Made Easy
Finding a place to stay in Panama City Beach is a breeze. With numerous beachfront condos available, the competition ensures that most options are clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. Expect to pay around $200 per night for a condo accommodating 4–6 people during the summer peak season, and about $120 in the off-season.
Where to Eat
Good news for food lovers: you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy fantastic meals in Panama City Beach. Some of our go-to spots are not only incredibly tasty but also budget-friendly.
For an authentic experience, Finn’s Island Style Grub in nearby historic St. Andrews features some of the best tacos I’ve ever tasted. Don’t miss the Ahi Tuna and Carne Asada tacos, and be sure to tell them I sent you (they won’t know who I am, but it’ll be fun!).
Another must-try is Thomas Donut & Snack Shop. While people often brave long lines for their famous donuts, I suggest visiting for an early lunch. Their kolaches—savory sausages wrapped in warm, yeast rolls—are incredible, and you can indulge in those donuts for dessert.
Craving something different? Head to Eat My Pasty, a family-friendly pub serving up a delicious British menu. The Thai Green Chicken pasty is a savory delight, and you can’t go wrong with Aunt Helen’s Waffle Berry Pasties for dessert. And don’t forget to pronounce it correctly—“PASS-tee”!
For seafood enthusiasts, Hunt’s Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant is a local favorite. Arrive early to avoid long waits and enjoy fresh oysters, shrimp, crab legs, and more in a relaxed atmosphere.
If you’re looking to splurge, Firefly is a beautiful dining option that’s worth every penny. Their she-crab soup is to die for, and the pepper-crusted stuffed filet mignon is a highlight. Be sure to make reservations, even in the off-season.
Adventure Awaits
You could easily spend your days lounging on Panama City Beach’s soft, white sands, but there are plenty of exciting activities to explore, too.
Families with kids of all ages will enjoy an Airboat Adventures tour. Glide through the creeks and marshes of West Bay, searching for alligators, eagles, and dolphins while learning about the local ecosystem.
For a unique experience, visit Shell Island in St. Andrews State Park. You can take a shuttle or rent a boat to explore the stunning beach known as the “Kiddie Pool,” where you’ll find beautiful shells and ideal snorkeling conditions.
A sunset dolphin tour is a must-do activity, with options for every budget. We splurged on a private cruise, and it was unforgettable! Our guide took us close to the dolphins swimming around our boat, and we even had the chance to swim alongside them.
If it rains, don’t fret! WonderWorks is an incredible indoor amusement park filled with interactive exhibits and rides perfect for a family day out. Just across the street, you’ll find Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which offers an Odditorium, mirror maze, and 7D movie theater—sure to keep the kids entertained.
Another fantastic indoor destination is Gulf World, featuring various animal exhibits, live shows, and interactive programs where you can swim with dolphins or stingrays.
Panama City Beach has something for everyone, from delicious seafood feasts to thrilling water slides at Shipwreck Island. Whether you’re fishing off the pier, renting wave runners, or exploring nature trails, this destination promises an unforgettable vacation for your family.
