I’m Running for Congress Because America Needs More Moms in Office

Hello! I’m Sarah Thompson, a proud mother of three wonderful kids: Emma (4), Noah (3), and Lily (9 months). I’m excited to announce that I’m running for Congress.

As a fellow mom, you might be wondering, “How can you possibly run for office with three little ones at home?” The answer is straightforward: Our country needs advocates who understand the struggles of everyday families. And trust me, my entire family is ready to join me on this thrilling adventure. My campaign is designed to be family-centric and different from anything we’ve seen in politics before.

Many of you may recall that this isn’t my first venture into the political arena. I previously ran as a Republican candidate for a state representative position in Ohio. Initially, I believed that the party would embrace a young, educated woman with a family-oriented perspective. However, my experience with local leadership made me reconsider my place in that party. While I didn’t change my values, I realized that they resonate more closely with the Democratic Party’s principles. We both believe in the power of collaboration, equality, and that everyone deserves a fair chance.

Let’s face it: our nation is in turmoil. The division and negativity that permeate our society feel like a heavy fog. This atmosphere has been cultivated by those in power, and when we look to our representatives in Washington, we often see individuals who are disconnected from our realities. With very few exceptions, it seems that many politicians are simply not listening to us. They are out of touch with the struggles we face daily.

Honestly, most of these so-called “representatives” don’t comprehend what it’s like to juggle the financial burden of childcare, which often consumes a significant portion of our paychecks. They seem oblivious to the skyrocketing costs of employer-provided health insurance and the student loan crisis that looms over our economy. Why should we expect them to understand our lives when they’ve lived in a bubble of privilege for so long? They craft policies based on hypothetical scenarios rather than our lived experiences.

Isn’t it time for a change? Don’t we deserve leaders who truly understand the challenges of raising a family in 2023? Who better to represent us in Washington than a mom? We know how to manage budgets, work collaboratively, and fix problems. I’m committed to confronting the issues we face and ensuring that our government reflects the diverse experiences of its citizens. We need teachers, nurses, mechanics, and yes, stay-at-home moms to bring their unique perspectives to the table.

One of my favorite quotes about motherhood comes from a prominent figure in the business world, who posed a thought-provoking question at a women’s leadership forum: “How many of you were prepared to be a mom before it happened? Yet you rose to the occasion — the most challenging job there is. So why worry about a role that isn’t nearly as vital?”

My resolve to fight for the people of Ohio’s 16th District has never been stronger. My former opponent is currently favored to secure the Republican nomination, which means I could face him again in the upcoming election. To him and any other candidate who emerges: I’m ready for a debate on the issues that matter to us. All I need is a platform to share our vision for this district and our nation.

Moms, it’s time to roll up our sleeves. We have a country to rebuild. And if you’re interested in family planning resources, check out this post on at-home insemination kits that could help you on your journey to motherhood.

In summary, my mission is clear: we need more moms in politics who understand the everyday challenges families face. Together, we can create a government that truly serves its people, one that reflects our values and priorities.
