Jazz artist Lila Jones from North Carolina is nominated for her sixth Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album, while her son, Max Jones, earned his first nomination in the Best Children’s Album category. Although their projects are distinct, both albums primarily explore the grief surrounding the loss of their beloved family member, Tom Jones, who passed away in 2019. Each child wanted their own unique story, so it turned into a nightly performance,” she explained. Lila’s album, Time Travel, served as her medium for processing grief. “You can’t find freedom without grieving. Ignoring your pain doesn’t bring you peace, so you must channel those feelings into something productive,” she said.
Max echoed her sentiments, stating that “creativity has been our source of healing,” adding that grief is “an extension of love.” His album, A Journey Through Time, incorporates archival audio recordings of his father, along with contributions from other family members. “I want children of color to see themselves as kids and to embrace their childhood,” he said. “They deserve the opportunity to revel in their joy and silliness while envisioning themselves as individuals who can flourish,” he added. The two plan to attend the awards ceremony together, accompanied by Max’s wife.
