6 Practical Tips for Picking Outfits for Family Photos

I have a slight obsession with family photos. We make it a point to capture these moments at least once a year, dedicating weeks to curating outfits and themes. I enjoy mixing existing pieces with a few new items to craft looks that truly resonate with me.

While I’m not a professional stylist or photographer, after countless family photo sessions, I’ve developed a good eye for what works well in photos. If you’re not sure how to coordinate outfits but want to give it a try, here are some helpful hints I’ve gathered through experience. Plus, I’ll share some of our family photos to illustrate my approach!

1. Pick a Color Palette that Offers Variety

Utilize Google and Pinterest for inspiration! This year, I aimed for a cohesive look for Thanksgiving photos. Instead of hunting for clothes based on a specific color, I decided to find a color palette that complemented what we already owned. I wanted my daughter in her cute metallic rose gold dress, so I searched for “color schemes with rose gold.” I found a palette crafted by an interior designer and used it to guide my closet search. We ended up with outfits that were comfortable and visually appealing without being overly coordinated.

2. Feature One Pattern and Coordinate with Solids

Last year, I discovered an adorable striped sweater for my son. I used the colors in his sweater as a springboard for everyone else’s outfits. The rest of the family wore solids or subtle patterns that echoed a color from his shirt. Even though he’s the only one in a pattern, it creates a harmonious look in the photos without drawing too much attention to him.

3. Embrace the Matchy-Matchy Vibe

If you’re a fan of matching outfits, go for it! Just look at how beautifully Kyle Richards and her family pulled off the classic jeans and white shirts in their holiday photo. To elevate a traditional look, vary the shapes and necklines of the shirts and mix different shades of denim to breathe new life into the classic theme.

4. Have Fun with Unique Family Themes

Consider playful themes like pajamas, winter gear, or even swimwear! There’s nothing more charming than a cozy family photo in jammies or bundled up in cute winter attire. You can capture some heartwarming moments by snuggling on a blanket and sharing laughter. For a creative twist, try a messy photo shoot with activities like painting or a water balloon fight. Summer photos are perfect for showcasing swimwear too—think pool floats and bright beach towels!

5. Stick to Neutrals When in Doubt

If you’re pressed for time or don’t want to overthink the outfit selection, neutrals are your best bet. Combinations of white, cream, denim, khaki, gray, and muted colors will work well. Pull together what your family already has, and you might find you have everything you need for great photos right in your closet!

6. Go All Out with Fancy Attire

If your sons have suits or your daughter has a formal dress, consider using those for your family photos. Wearing your best attire can add a touch of elegance and make for stunning images. The colors may not need to match perfectly, as long as everyone is dressed to a similar level. And if you’re unsure about the color coordination, timeless black and white shots are always a classy option.
