This Is Why My Heart Ached When a Mother at Target Apologized to Me

To the mother who felt the need to apologize for her child’s antics at Target: please don’t. There’s no reason to say sorry for your kids, especially when they are joyful and thriving. When your little ones are laughing, playing, and simply enjoying life, who cares about any minor disturbances? They are kids, healthy and happy, living their lives just like any typical toddler.

Not too long ago, I found myself in a similar situation. My boisterous 2-year-old son was full of energy, racing through the aisles and laughing loudly as he played peekaboo with the world around him. That was our life, and I was you.

Since my son’s leukemia diagnosis, witnessing this mother’s apology stirred intense emotions within me. I wanted to shout at her, to shake her and tell her how much I longed for those carefree moments. I wished that my biggest concern was my son’s joyful laughter echoing in a store, and not the fear of his compromised immune system. I yearned for the days I could let him explore the toy aisle at Target, selecting a special item to commemorate the milestones of his treatment.

After spending a month watching my son in a hospital bed, I fully understand the saying, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.” I can’t wait for the day when my sweet boy can relish his normal life once again, and I will never take a simple outing to Target for granted.

In summary, let’s celebrate the joy of our children rather than apologizing for their exuberance. Every moment spent with them is a treasure, and we should embrace their laughter and energy, not shy away from it.
