So, when we learned of Lin-Manuel’s new project, “Vivo,” on Netflix, it quickly made its way onto our watchlist. Fast forward two weeks, and my daughter is totally obsessed with “Vivo.”
If you haven’t seen it yet, “Vivo” is an animated musical journey featuring a musically talented kinkajou on a mission to deliver a song to his owner’s long-lost love. Along the way, he teams up with an energetic young girl named Gabi, who is determined to help him, whether he likes it or not.
When she’s not glued to the movie, my daughter is busy watching music videos on YouTube or dancing to the soundtrack in the shower. Normally, this kind of repetition would drive me up the wall. The thought of rewatching the same film endlessly can be exasperating! I mean, with all these streaming options available, why replay the same one? But, here’s the thing—I don’t mind “Vivo” like I do with other films.
Honestly, I’m usually a “one and done” viewer. I absorb everything in one go and move on. But with “Vivo,” it’s different.
This movie is fantastic—Ynairaly Simo, who voices Gabi, is nothing short of extraordinary. Plus, it features one of my favorite actors, Brian Tyree Henry. And okay, I’ll admit, Missy Elliot’s song “My Own Drum,” performed by Ynairaly, is a highlight too.
As a single mom trying to build a business from home while juggling our lives, the last couple of years have been tough. I constantly worry about finances and the stress of managing a household with three strong Black women. And, of course, there’s the anxiety around sending my daughter back to school amid ongoing Covid concerns.
Being able to pause for a moment to dance with my daughter or sing along to “Vivo” means the world to me. Those fleeting moments let us escape from stress and just be together—happy, laughing, and living. Sometimes, that’s all you need.
