As schools in Florida’s Hillsborough School District commenced their academic year, the situation quickly escalated. In just the first week, a staggering 1,800 students tested positive for COVID-19, and over 10,000 were placed in quarantine. This district, which ranks as the seventh-largest in the U.S. with more than 200,000 students, is grappling with the surging COVID-19 cases driven by the highly contagious delta variant.

On Wednesday, the district reported that 10,384 students and 338 staff members were in quarantine, with a total of 1,805 confirmed COVID-19 cases across the student and staff population. While masks are mandated for students in Hillsborough schools, parents have the option to opt-out, resulting in over 28,000 families choosing to do so.

An emergency school board meeting was held to discuss the situation, which quickly became contentious as parents expressed differing opinions on the necessity of universal masking for children. “Have any children died?” one mother demanded, while others pointed out that COVID-19 has indeed claimed young lives in Florida and beyond. A wife of an immunocompromised teacher voiced her concerns about the lack of consistency in enforcing mask rules compared to dress codes, stating, “This tiny piece of cloth is not taking away your freedom. … Grow up.”

The nearly three-hour-long meeting concluded with the board voting in favor of an emergency mask mandate that would last for at least 30 days, commencing immediately. Parents can still opt their children out of this requirement, but only with a doctor’s note. School officials expressed their frustrations over Governor Ron DeSantis’s ban on mask mandates in educational settings, which they feel limits their ability to protect students and staff effectively.

The governor’s order places pressure on districts, threatening financial repercussions for non-compliance. Florida currently holds the highest COVID-19 case numbers in the nation, with more than 55 children being hospitalized daily due to the virus.
