In light of rising Delta variant cases, Broadway has announced a new policy requiring audiences to wear masks and provide proof of vaccination before entering any of New York City’s 41 theaters. This mandate, effective through October, also extends to performers, crew members, and theater staff.
As outlined in a recent press release from the Broadway League, attendees must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine authorized by the FDA or WHO. To gain entry, guests will need to present proof of vaccination alongside a valid ticket. “Fully vaccinated” means that the performance date must fall at least 14 days after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or at least 14 days after a single-dose vaccine.
Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating, “It’s encouraging that theatre owners have chosen to implement these collective safety measures across all Broadway venues. A consistent policy simplifies the experience for our audiences and reinforces our commitment to their safety.”
While this policy will remain in place until the end of October, theater owners plan to reassess the situation in September, potentially adjusting guidelines based on scientific developments. Bonnie Comley, president of The Drama League, mentioned, “We’re taking a community approach to ensure safety, and we’ll reevaluate in October. This is a positive step forward.”
There are exceptions to this new policy. Children under 12, as well as individuals with certain medical conditions or religious beliefs that prevent vaccination, are exempt. However, these individuals must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the show or a negative antigen test within six hours prior to the performance.
Nick Scandalios from The Nederlander Organization emphasized that safety remains a top priority: “With these measures in place and considering the high vaccination rates among NYC audiences, Broadway is dedicated to maintaining public health standards. We are looking forward to welcoming patrons back to the magic of Broadway.”
