We Host Classic Birthday Celebrations, and They’re Absolutely Amazing

My twins just celebrated their sixth birthday. Every year since they were born, I’ve organized a birthday party for them. It’s the one occasion (besides Christmas) that they eagerly anticipate. Our discussions about it begin the day after their birthday and continue until the following year’s celebration. They’re thrilled about every detail of their special day, and we always manage to stick to a budget. It’s not about the money we spend (believe me, it’s minimal) — it’s about creating lasting memories, which is truly invaluable.

I have no recollection of my mother celebrating my birthdays, except for my twenty-fifth. On that occasion, she brought her friends, all recovering addicts, who showered me with affection and my favorite ice cream cake. They sang “Happy Birthday” to me and made me feel celebrated, even though it felt a bit awkward since that year, they were my only friends. Yes, it was a memorable year!

As a parent, I find it essential to help my children create memories, and what better way to do that than to celebrate the day they entered the world? We typically start planning about a month in advance. My partner and I are those last-minute planners. But somehow, everything always falls into place, and if it works, why change it?

This year, we asked our kids to choose three friends each for the guest list. They provided their names, and it was up to us to make it happen. We reached out to parents we hadn’t met before (thanks, COVID) and sent out Canva-designed invites to their kindergarten classmates and neighbors.

The party took place at our local beach, with a “beach party” theme. (Having a birthday party at home is great until it’s time for the cleanup, which can rival any unsupervised teenage gathering.) We ordered pizza and cupcakes from my favorite bakery. Let’s be honest; if we’re spending on the party, the food should be enjoyable for the planners. So yes, I may have splurged a bit on the cupcakes, but it was really my treat for bringing them into the world: a delicious piece of cake, or cupcake in this case.

Everyone had a fantastic time, including the parents. We got to mingle with adults while our kids chatted with their friends, enjoying the outdoors and sunshine.

The truth is, birthday parties don’t have to be extravagant to be unforgettable. Their first birthday was a simple backyard gathering. We had pizza and an ice cream cake with a small group of family and close friends. We didn’t need to impress anyone; they were just babies. As they’ve grown, we’ve increased our spending slightly; this year, they received their biggest gift yet, a Power Wheel to share. However, for their actual birthday party, it was mostly a no-cost event. A free venue, pizza, cupcakes, and party favors from the Dollar Store.

Celebrating is free; it’s our choice of celebration that can lead to expenses. The charm of a budget-friendly birthday party is that there’s no pressure to create perfection because you didn’t spend a fortune. And everyone knows that a more laid-back host leads to a better celebration.

Aside from my penchant for fancy cupcakes, our kids’ birthday parties are a moment for my partner and me to appreciate that we’ve made it another year together, happy and healthy. We celebrate this achievement because it deserves all the cake and pizza we can enjoy. Create those memories without breaking the bank.
