Why I Will Always Embrace My Inner ‘Twi-Hard’

When the news broke on a morning talk show that a prequel to the Twilight saga, titled Midnight Sun, was on its way, I braced myself for the inevitable backlash. You know the naysayers I’m talking about—the ones who scoff at Bella’s lack of depth, criticize Edward as some sort of stalker, or question Stephenie Meyer’s writing chops. Fifteen years later, the skeptics still feel the need to voice their disdain for a series that revolves around a seemingly mundane teenage girl falling for an immortal vampire. (He froze at 17, okay?!)

So listen up, critics. Your opinions? Not needed.

That’s right. Hold back on your self-important literary critiques. Let the Twi-hards revel in our excitement. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for Midnight Sun, and—oh, wait, let me check on my concern for your literary taste. What’s this? It’s nonexistent! I genuinely don’t care if my affection for Twilight makes you question my literary preferences or my intellect. Your thoughts are irrelevant to me and to everyone else who shares my eagerness for this release. So kindly take several seats, my judgmental friend.

I see you, the one who swears by Dostoyevsky and Palahniuk, thinking that makes you some kind of literary connoisseur. Bravo! throws confetti in your honor My shelves are stocked with classics and contemporary fiction as well, and I enjoy them just fine, but I’ve never read them twice.

Let’s be clear: Twi-hards shouldn’t have to justify our love for Twilight any more than someone who enjoys a mixed bag of genres. It’s absurd how some people feel the urge to inform us how “unintelligent” they think we are simply for enjoying these stories. Are you hoping to change our minds? What’s the point? It’s like trying to convince someone that kittens are overrated.

And yes, we understand how storytelling works. We know about plot arcs, character development, and what makes dialogue shine. We’re aware Twilight has its flaws (Edward, please respect Bella’s privacy), but it’s fiction, and it’s a thrilling narrative.

No book has ever captivated me quite like Twilight. I read it at stoplights, hoping for red lights to steal a few more sentences about Edward and Bella. I snuck pages at work, balancing the book on my lap under my desk, praying no one would catch me “working” on my reading habit.

I connected deeply with Bella’s relatable ordinariness and found Edward’s obsessive love enchanting. I was genuinely frustrated that vampires aren’t real; the Twilight universe made my everyday life feel painfully mundane. After finishing Breaking Dawn, I immediately turned back to the first book for another round.

I’m grateful to Meyer for releasing Midnight Sun during such tumultuous times; it’s the escape many of us desperately need. The Twilight fandom remembers when Meyer announced in 2008 that an early draft was leaked online. Despite the breach, she opted to share an excerpt, but vowed never to release a full version. Over the years, like many in the fanbase, I lost hope of ever seeing it completed, as Meyer repeatedly stated it wasn’t happening.

But now, it is! Squee!!

To clarify, I’m not here to persuade anyone to embrace Twilight if it’s not their cup of tea. It’s completely okay if it’s not for you. People have diverse tastes; opinions are subjective, and the heart wants what it wants. Mine just happens to desire a glittering eternity with my stylish vampire family in a sprawling modern home somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.

So, you can dislike Twilight all you want. That’s your prerogative. But don’t try to rain on our parade simply because your literary tastes are more “refined.” All you’re doing is inspiring us to whack you over the head with our shiny new copies of Midnight Sun.

In summary, my excitement for Twilight and its new installment transcends the criticism of literary snobs. The joy these stories bring is what matters, and I’ll proudly wear my ‘Twi-Hard’ badge forever.
