This Summer, Remember That Your Body Is a ‘Beach Body’

As we eagerly await summer, many of us feel the pressure to get in shape. With bathing suits hitting the stores well before the sun is shining, we often find ourselves bombarded with dieting commercials and social media ads promising the perfect beach body.

The truth is, the concept of a “beach body” is a myth — there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all body ideal, and you certainly can’t achieve it overnight. Like many, I’ve been drawn into the world of trendy diets and fitness apps, often with the best intentions but little follow-through. This summer, I urge you to embrace who you are and enjoy the season as you are.

Our culture is saturated with diet trends and fitness promotions, especially as summer approaches, almost reminiscent of the holiday shopping frenzy. However, we are enough just as we are. We don’t need to chase after the latest fad diets or feel inadequate about those “extra pounds.” Instead, let’s focus on loving and accepting the wonderful bodies that sustain us and create memories with our loved ones. Yes, our bodies may have changed over time, but that’s perfectly fine. Embrace every facet of yourself, both inside and out.

Resist the temptation to spend on weight loss programs or pills. Instead, nurture your self-love and confidence from within. It’s essential to silence the negative self-talk and replace it with affirmations of beauty and self-worth. Repeat “I am beautiful” and “I am enough” until these words resonate deeply within you.

The weight loss industry thrives on our insecurities, raking in over $30 billion each year, banking on our feelings of inadequacy. They rely on us feeling dissatisfied with ourselves, pushing us towards their latest weight-loss products and gimmicks.

Scrolling through social media, it’s easy to feel like we should be dieting as summer approaches. Instead, let’s celebrate our bodies by choosing to exercise when it feels good to us, not because of external pressures. Eating healthy and exercising has undeniable health benefits, but they shouldn’t dictate our happiness or worth.

Personally, I’m not a fan of bikinis, and that’s completely okay! I still enjoy taking my kids to the beach, wearing a bathing suit, and splashing around in the water. After a fun day at the beach, we indulge in ice cream topped with Oreos — a true delight for me. The trips to the beach and ice cream outings are about creating lasting memories with my children, not about conforming to societal standards regarding body image. I refuse to let my physical appearance hinder my ability to be present for my kids. I might download a few more fitness apps this summer, but remember, my “beach body” is defined by my own terms.

Educate yourself to make informed choices about nutrition, but allow yourself the freedom to enjoy life without obsessing over perceived flaws. I look forward to a day when we support apps that celebrate our beauty rather than reminding us of the unrealistic standards we feel pressured to meet.

Every body is unique, and that diversity is something to be cherished. So, this summer — love yourself just as I love myself.
