Two new statues commemorating George Floyd were unveiled this week in New York and New Jersey to celebrate Juneteenth. These statues honor Floyd, whose tragic death at the hands of police in Minneapolis last year ignited a worldwide movement for racial justice.

Newark Statue Unveiling
Meanwhile, a 700-pound bronze statue of Floyd, crafted by artist Stanley Watts, was unveiled in front of Newark’s City Hall. Mayor Ras Baraka expressed hope that this statue will motivate the public to engage in local social justice initiatives. “George Floyd represents a lot more than himself,” Baraka said. This statue is set to remain on display for at least a year.
New Harriet Tubman Monument
Additionally, the final design for a new Harriet Tubman monument was revealed, replacing a statue of Christopher Columbus that was removed last summer. Designed by artist Nina Cooke John, the Tubman monument will be installed next summer in Washington Park, which will be renamed Tubman Square. John expressed her excitement about creating a space that encourages community reflection and connection to Tubman’s legacy.
