Real Talk: My Experience with LipSense – Surprisingly Positive!

As a supportive friend, I recently found myself trying LipSense, a popular lip product that a close acquaintance, Jenna, has been selling. I was added to her Facebook sales group, and out of curiosity, I decided to delve into this makeup world, even though I typically lean towards lip gloss or balm instead of bold lipsticks.

Makeup has never been my thing; I prefer subtlety, often opting for the most sheer, nude shades available. So when I learned about LipSense and its starting price of $55 for a lip color and gloss, I was initially skeptical. That’s quite a commitment for someone who only dabbles in lipstick!

LipSense operates as a multi-level marketing (MLM) model, which means you might see a lot of posts and tutorials flooding your social media feed. I can understand if that’s not your cup of tea. Thankfully, Jenna approached me without any pressure, making it easier for me to give the product a fair shot.

The primary selling point of LipSense is its smudge-proof formula. It claims to stay put until you choose to remove it. If you’ve seen those videos of users rubbing their lips and revealing clean fingers, you know what I mean. While those clips can be a bit annoying, the product does indeed live up to its promise. Given the price, it should!

Initially, the application process felt a bit intimidating. You apply three layers of color, allowing each to dry before sealing it with the gloss. If you happen to stray outside the lines (which I did), you’ll need to purchase a specialized remover, adding to the overall cost. This isn’t a quick-fix solution; it requires a level of commitment that might not suit everyone’s lifestyle. You won’t be casually throwing on this lipstick in a pinch!

While the color can feel somewhat drying at first, the gloss helps mitigate that effect. However, be prepared to use the gloss frequently to maintain a comfortable feel on your lips. The gloss is quite thick, so use it wisely. And yes, you may find yourself buying replacements more often than you’d like.

LipSense offers around 36 shades, with some retired colors fetching high prices on eBay. I wasn’t keen on the bold options, so I quickly eliminated most of the shades. Thankfully, I discovered a nude color that I found acceptable. For those of us with deeper skin tones, finding the right nude can be challenging, but I tried “Bella,” a popular choice that wasn’t too bad.

To explore more colors, I reluctantly tested “Mauve Ice,” which didn’t quite suit my complexion, and had it mixed with “Purple Reign,” an eye-catching purple hue. While the combination toned it down a bit, I still felt a bit out of my element—like I’d just indulged in a grape-flavored candy. The application and removal process was equally meticulous, calling for patience on my part.

In conclusion, while I don’t see myself investing in LipSense anytime soon, the experience wasn’t as negative as I anticipated. I remain a proud member of the “Team No Lipstick” camp, but I appreciate Jenna’s approach in sharing this product without the high-pressure tactics often associated with MLMs. It may take some time for me to consider a $55 lip kit again, but I’m still on the hunt for that perfect shade.
