Trigger warning: suicide

If you weren’t familiar with Courtney Stodden two days ago, chances are you are now. Headlines have erupted online over the past few days, revealing that Cassie Taylor has publicly apologized for her appalling and cruel behavior toward Stodden years ago. Taylor’s remarks included telling Stodden to “take a dirt nap” and “end it all,” among many other shocking statements.

This apology is, without a doubt, warranted. Courtney deserves recognition for the hurtful words hurled at them during a tumultuous time in their youth. While Taylor’s apology could certainly have been more thoughtful, she may genuinely feel remorse, and that’s acceptable. However, a simple apology cannot undo the harm inflicted, and many of us who appreciate Taylor’s work today must remember her past mistreatment of Stodden. If others express their disgust or Taylor faces consequences because of it, that’s something she must confront. It’s a lesson in accountability: be better, and you’ll be viewed more favorably.

But let’s shift focus back to Courtney Stodden.

For those who may not be up to speed, Courtney Stodden burst into the public eye in 2011 when Doug Hutchison, a then 51-year-old actor, chose to groom and marry them at just 16 years old. Instead of condemning Hutchison for his predatory actions, society chose to objectify and mock Stodden, a minor.

A compassionate person could have seen Stodden as a child in a complex family situation, with a mother in a troubled marriage who was not positioned to consent to her child marrying an adult. But Hutchison was not a compassionate person; he was a predator.

Hutchison claims he didn’t know Stodden was 16 when they began communicating, a statement that is as absurd as it is disturbing. Stodden has alleged that Hutchison is currently grooming another young woman, and I wholeheartedly believe them. Time will tell, but I have always viewed Hutchison as a creep.

In a revealing interview with Marlow Stern from The Daily Beast, Stodden shared distressing details about their time with Hutchison that should horrify any adult and inspire shame in those who contributed to their public humiliation.

Stodden disclosed that their relationship with Hutchison was swift; they were just 16 when they first received his email, and it was clear from early on that he had ulterior motives. Hutchison effectively groomed not just Stodden, but their entire family.

Courtney stated, “I feel like there were so many things going on in my parents’ marriage that they were in an easy place to be groomed. My mom wasn’t happy in the marriage… they thought I was going to be saved and protected, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.”

Once wed to a man over three times their age, the real nightmare began. Imagine undergoing an ultrasound on live television to prove your teenage body is real? Or participating in an inappropriate skit with a male comedian while your husband looked on? The adults in those situations failed Stodden profoundly.

Stodden participated in numerous publicity stunts during their marriage, often to elevate Hutchison’s fame. Some might argue that Stodden consented to these acts; however, they were not of legal age to make such decisions. They were coerced, not consenting.

Courtney shared, “[Doug Hutchison] referred to me a few times as ‘the Golden Goose.’” They clarified, “People have this misconception that I was with him for money, but I was the sugar mama—or rather, the sugar child.”

Stodden adopted a stereotypical “dumb blonde” persona in interviews, giving the impression of someone who was dazed or intoxicated. The truth is heartbreaking. During a 2011 interview, they felt the need to defend Hutchison, saying, “That was my role that day.” They later confessed, “I didn’t drink then or had ever taken a pill. But I was just drunk on fear and being taken advantage of.”

The trauma from that period has left lasting scars. Stodden reflected, “I have a lot of trauma from that entire chapter in my life… I was being mocked, overtly sexualized, and abused—not only in my home but internationally.”

Moreover, Stodden faced years of psychological and emotional abuse from Hutchison. Although he never physically assaulted them, his mental torment was relentless. Stodden recounted being cornered for hours, terrified and trapped.

Eventually, after nearly a decade marred by manipulation and chaos, Stodden separated from Hutchison in 2018, with their divorce finalized in March 2020. Now 26, Stodden is free from their abuser but continues to grapple with the aftermath.

Despite escaping that relationship, Stodden expressed, “Even though I’m out of that relationship, I still feel heavy… I hope that eventually I’ll be able to find genuine happiness.”

The treatment that Courtney Stodden received from society and the media is absolutely UNFORGIVABLE. We cannot excuse this by claiming it was “another time.” When Stodden first entered the spotlight, popular culture was vibrant, and we were more than capable of recognizing the humanity in a vulnerable child, but we chose to ignore it.

We have to do better. Courtney Stodden has endured a tumultuous past, but we can ensure that the rest of their life doesn’t descend into further chaos. They deserve a future filled with genuine happiness.

In April, Courtney Stodden announced their pronouns as they/them, and any references to “girl” or “woman” are direct quotes from them.

Summary:

Courtney Stodden’s story illustrates the profound impact of societal and media mistreatment during their formative years. The recent apology from Cassie Taylor highlights the need for accountability, but it cannot undo the trauma Stodden experienced. As a society, we must recognize the humanity in individuals like Stodden and strive to ensure their future is filled with support and understanding.
