Disney Parks is taking significant steps to enhance gender expression among its cast members with a new dress code initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity. The role of cast members is vital in shaping guests’ experiences at Disney, ensuring every visit is magical and memorable. Recognizing this, the company is revising its uniform policies to allow cast members to feel more comfortable by embracing a broader range of personal expression, including hairstyles, costumes, tattoos, nail styles, and jewelry.

This policy adjustment is part of a larger inclusion initiative, which adds a fifth principle—Inclusion—to Disney’s previously established “Four Keys,” which are Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. Josh D’Amaro, chair of Disney Parks, emphasized the importance of this new approach in a blog post, stating, “The 5 Keys – with Inclusion at the heart – will continue to guide us as we interact with guests and create the next generation of Disney experiences.”

The updated guidelines will provide cast members with more flexibility in expressing their identities at work. D’Amaro noted, “Our new approach allows for personal expression related to gender-inclusive hairstyles, jewelry, nail styles, and costume choices, as well as permitting visible tattoos. This is aimed at ensuring our cast can express their cultures and individuality, while also remaining relevant in today’s workplace.”

D’Amaro further explained that when cast members can express themselves authentically, they can deliver exemplary service, enriching the guest experience. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance inclusivity, including reimagining attractions and celebrating diverse stories and experiences, such as the upcoming updates to the Jungle Cruise and new adventures featuring Princess Tiana.

“This is just the beginning as we continue to work toward a world where we all belong – including a more diverse and inclusive Disney Parks, Experiences and Products,” he added. “Although there’s more to do, we’re committed to listening, learning, and making meaningful improvements.”

In a notable shift, it’s worth mentioning that Disney only began allowing cast members to have beards in 2012, highlighting this recent progress toward inclusivity. “The world is changing, and we will change with it, and continue to be a source of joy and inspiration for all the world. We’ll never stop working to make sure that Disney is a welcoming place for all,” D’Amaro concluded.
