Brielle Thompson is making waves in the world of NASCAR. In 2016, she became the first Black woman to join a NASCAR pit crew, and now she has achieved another groundbreaking milestone as the first Black female tire changer in the sport. “I feel like God chose me for this role,” Thompson shared. “It takes a strong individual to take on this challenge, especially given NASCAR’s history and the familiar faces typically seen on the track. I was a bit anxious initially about how I would be perceived, but I realized someone had to step up, and I was ready to be that person.”

Participating in NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity initiative, which aims to recruit and train minority and female drivers and pit crew members, Thompson was the only woman vying for a position on the pit crew team. It was during this audition that she discovered her passion for tire changing. Just weeks later, she was invited to join NASCAR’s pit crew program.

In 2019, Thompson made history by becoming the first Black woman to pit at the Daytona 500. In the following year, she was honored with the crew member award at the 2020 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Awards Ceremony. This year, she made headlines again as the first Black female tire changer, specifically for the No. 51 Chevrolet with Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Recently, she teamed up with fellow women pit crew members, Maya Johnson and Tara Winters, as the only women in the Daytona 500 pit.

“It’s inspiring to see other women reach out to me and say, ‘You’re living my dream. How can I get involved?’” Thompson tells media outlets. “More people are seeing me do this, and they want to follow suit. I hope to see many more women in this sport in the future.”

As a tire changer, Thompson’s role involves swiftly removing lug nuts from tires and replacing them with new ones, along with assisting in tire management on race day. And she’s impressively quick at it. “Some doubters claimed I wouldn’t last long, that I’d be gone in a few months,” she reflects on the skepticism she faced. “But negativity just fuels my determination to excel even further.”
