In an act of remarkable bravery, Capitol Police officer Marcus Johnson put his life on the line to steer a furious mob away from the Senate chambers during the violent events at the Capitol building. A viral video captured Johnson leading a group of aggressive protestors away from the Senate floor and up a staircase, drawing them away from where lawmakers were gathered.
In footage shared by journalist Alex Taylor, Johnson is seen glancing towards an open hallway leading to the Senate chambers. Realizing the danger, he attempts to block the entrance but quickly understands he’s alone against a throng of rioters. Armed only with a baton, Johnson confronts a man in a QAnon shirt, later identified as Steve Roberts, who aggressively follows him up the stairs and into a back corridor.
Eventually, Johnson is joined by fellow officers, but his quick thinking was crucial in preventing the situation from escalating further. Taylor tweeted the moment, highlighting the chaos as rioters breached the Capitol.
Roberts was later apprehended by the FBI and faces multiple federal charges, including illegally entering a restricted area and disrupting government proceedings. His employer subsequently terminated his position. Tragically, the violence resulted in five deaths, including a Capitol officer.
“Officer Johnson’s courage in the face of this violent mob helped protect the lives of those inside the Senate chambers. His actions were nothing short of heroic,” stated Rep. Emily Carter, D-Calif., in a social media post.
Johnson, a veteran who served in the military, received praise for his selflessness during an unprecedented crisis that saw many officers criticized for the security failures that day. Following the breach, police sent an urgent alert to those in the Capitol to take shelter and secure their offices. The rioters were heard chanting slogans demanding to “Stop the steal!” and “Where’s the Speaker?” in reference to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Thanks to Johnson’s decisive actions, a potential tragedy was averted.
