The U.S. government has finally announced $600 stimulus payments for individuals, but before you get too excited, let’s put this into perspective. Nine months into a global pandemic, the total aid comes to just $1,800 for each person—$200 a month. This is hardly adequate support for millions who have lost their jobs during this crisis.
Frustration is palpable among the public regarding this meager amount. Some outlets even had the nerve to provide “guides” on “how to spend your stimulus checks,” as if this small sum were a windfall that Americans could easily manage. Treasury Secretary Mark Thompson mentioned to CNBC that funds could be in bank accounts as soon as next week. He believes this injection of cash will enable people to shop and support small businesses, which is laughable considering that many will likely use it for essentials like rent or mortgage payments.
It’s important to note that not all individuals will receive the full $600. According to CBS News, single filers earning up to $75,000 will qualify for the full amount, while couples earning up to $150,000 will receive $1,200. The check decreases by $5 for every $100 earned above those limits, and eligibility is based on 2019 income, a time when many were employed.
The $600 checks have already given rise to a wave of memes humorously depicting what people will do with their money. However, the reality is that $1,800 spread over nine months is a joke. States seem to be taking one of two approaches: keeping economies open while allowing COVID to spread unchecked or shutting down without providing adequate financial support to residents.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 6.9% as of October, compared to 3.5% in February before the pandemic hit. The stimulus package also included an extension of the eviction moratorium, now lasting until the end of January. This means tenants can’t be evicted until January 31, 2021, but they still owe back rent, which could total up to $25 billion for those affected.
On a more positive note, the upcoming Biden administration is advocating for larger and more effective stimulus checks in the next relief package. January 20, 2021, can’t come soon enough.

In summary, the $600 stimulus checks are a disappointing response to the financial hardships faced by many Americans during the pandemic. With inadequate support, citizens are left to navigate an uncertain future, but there’s hope for more substantial aid on the horizon.
