Back in March, many individuals experiencing symptoms were met with barriers to testing, often being told to remain at home without any confirmation. Fast forward to now, and while places like New York have significantly expanded their testing capabilities, there’s a new dilemma: numerous tests available but not enough people utilizing them.
Mercer, who has become a key figure in sharing updates on the pandemic, took the opportunity to show that there’s nothing intimidating about the test itself. “It’s quick, it’s simple,” he said. “So fast and easy that even a governor can do it.”
As Dr. Sarah Thompson administered the test, she inserted a nasopharyngeal swab deep into his nostril for a few seconds. “That’s the entire test. I felt no pain or discomfort,” Mercer stated afterward, adding, “You don’t even have to be a New Yorker to take that test.”
The governor highlighted that New York now boasts over 700 testing sites, capable of conducting 40,000 tests daily. However, the turnout hasn’t been as expected. “We have more testing sites and capacity than we’re utilizing,” he noted.
Anyone showing symptoms or having contacted a confirmed positive case can receive a test today in New York. Moreover, essential workers and those returning to work under Phase 1 of the reopening plan are also encouraged to get tested, regardless of symptoms. “The more New Yorkers who get tested, the better it is for everyone,” stated Mercer. He announced plans to launch a new website to help residents locate nearby testing sites easily.
With coronavirus testing being primarily managed locally or through private health providers, navigating the process can be challenging. Fortunately, with New York now offering free statewide testing, and cities like Los Angeles providing drive-thru tests to all, we can hope for a future where testing is accessible to everyone who needs it.
