When you ask most women about romance, they often think of being showered with indulgent chocolates, receiving a massive bouquet of roses from their partner, or being taken out for an exciting date night. I can definitely relate to this, as I count myself among those ladies. However, after the arrival of my two kids and some unexpected weight gain, I’ve realized there’s something else that belongs on my list. While I adore the affection my husband lavishes on me, I’ve discovered that treating myself with some serious self-care is equally romantic.

This year, I’m embarking on a self-love journey, and it begins with a candlelit dinner for two—just me and my FUPA.

Many of us remember when Beyoncé gave a heartfelt shout-out to her “little FUPA” back in 2018, and the term has been around for quite a while. But in case you need a refresher, FUPA (pronounced “foo-pah”) stands for the “fat upper pubic area.” Lately, I’ve found myself reflecting a lot on mine.

The soft, loose skin of my mom pouch was once a source of deep emotional struggle for me. After spending two exhausting decades maintaining a thin physique and resorting to extreme measures to keep it that way, motherhood hit me hard, and I was shocked by how my body had transformed post-birth. Where did my flat abs go? Why won’t those stretch marks fade? And when will my breasts reclaim their youthful lift?

But then, a remarkable shift occurred. One day, while looking at myself in the mirror, I decided to kick shame to the curb and let self-love take the wheel. Nowadays, living my best life involves celebrating my fabulous body and rejecting the idea that weight loss must be the focal point of self-care. I’ve embraced plus-sized shopping, dance breaks to Lizzo, and I’m fully on board with the body positivity movement. My husband also jumped on this train, openly expressing how much he loves my body—regardless of size.

Here’s a newsflash: I’m really loving my body too.

Before I pop the champagne and toast to all the FUPAs out there, I want to address something crucial. Embracing a body part that society has long criticized can be incredibly challenging. Many of us have worked tirelessly to hide, erase, or avoid having a soft tummy, loose skin, or a little pooch. And honestly, who can blame us? Profit-driven industries have conditioned us to believe our bodies are flawed and in need of fixing. The same businesses that want us to buy their products are the ones misleading us into viewing our FUPAs as problematic. It’s no wonder so many still buy into this false narrative—it’s scary to step outside our comfort zones and challenge societal norms.

But if these norms keep us in a cycle of shame and self-loathing, it’s time for a wake-up call.

So, consider this your invitation to my self-love celebration. All you need to bring is your fabulous self, along with your FUPA. And while we’re at it, let’s invite your cellulite, jiggly arms, and wrinkles too. Just remind each body part that they are not the issue. You are not the problem. The shame we’ve been fed since childhood? That’s the real issue.

Moms already face enough societal pressure, and we shouldn’t have to deal with lies that teach us to despise our naturally changing bodies. Women everywhere struggle with the notion that our worth is tied to our appearance, which must conform to a certain ideal.

I’m done with it. How women look should not be regarded as the most interesting aspect of who we are—we have so much more to contribute beyond our size or shape.

Imagine a world where women were free from the pressure to fight against their own bodies. Picture a place where FUPAs could exist without judgment, ridicule, or fear. Think about how much we could accomplish if we weren’t constantly bombarded with the idea of fitting into a single, unrealistic body standard. I truly believe that if we could just relax and let our FUPAs breathe, we could change the world.

Remember, you don’t have to do anything, earn anything, wear anything, say anything, or lose anything to be deserving of space. You can assert your inherent worth right now by questioning the inherited beliefs that have kept you from embracing your whole self. Your FUPA is just as magical and deserving of respect as any other part of you. Our bodies are meant to evolve—whether that pouch came from pregnancy or has just been there forever, every part of you is allowed to change. In fact, that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Today, I’m letting my FUPA fly free. I’ll be jiggling my belly rolls, celebrating my stretch marks, and showering love on my relaxed mom boobs. And yes, I’ll be diving into that giant box of chocolates my husband may or may not have gifted me.
