I Donated My Eggs for a Friend to Start Her Family

So, five months have passed since I went through the IVF process to donate my eggs to a friend. After sharing my experience with others, I’ve come to realize that many people lack a clear understanding of how this journey works. Questions arise like: What happens to the eggs? How long does it take to know if the recipient is pregnant? And what’s the emotional aftermath of egg donation?

My situation is unique in that I participated in a “known donor” transfer. A close family friend approached me about donating my eggs, and I gladly accepted. Many donors are anonymous, meaning the recipient has never met them, but my friend and I had a connection.

When a woman donates her eggs, she often does so anonymously, leaving her without any future knowledge about them. Interestingly, I might become an anonymous donor for someone else down the line. But I’ll save that thought for later.

Reflecting on the Experience

Reflecting on my experience, I can confidently say it was fulfilling. There were certainly challenges, but I am grateful my friend invited me to be part of this incredible journey. After retrieving 41 eggs, they were fertilized using donor sperm. Over the next few days, the embryos were monitored, and ultimately, 11 viable embryos were created. My friend decided to implant two of them, leaving nine frozen for potential future use.

Legally speaking, I no longer hold any rights to these embryos; they are not my children, and I have no authority over their future. For some donors, accepting this can be difficult. However, since my friend and I have an open dialogue, we discuss the fate of the leftover embryos together.

The Joy of Pregnancy

Following the embryo transfer, my friend learned she was pregnant within two weeks. A few days ago, we got the wonderful news that she is expecting two girls! Her family is overjoyed, and mine shares in that happiness.

As for the remaining embryos, they will be preserved throughout her pregnancy and subsequently donated to the fertility clinic. At that juncture, I’ll transition to being an unknown donor in the clinic’s registry. This notion brings up mixed feelings. What will those girls think as they grow up with questions about their origins? Will they seek me out? I can’t answer those questions now, but I hope they find loving families.

The Miracle of Egg Donation

Egg donation is truly a modern miracle. Without advancements in science, many wonderful people would never have the opportunity to become parents. The eggs I donated were a gift; my husband and I weren’t trying to conceive, so they would have simply been released by my body otherwise. I’m thrilled they can now help create a family.

Now, the real work of nurturing those babies rests with my friend. We’ll be waiting and hoping for a healthy pregnancy. Our families plan to stay connected, supporting her and the children as they grow, as much as they desire.

There’s a fine line between being genetically linked and respecting boundaries. I don’t feel a personal connection to these babies beyond the love I have for them as precious beings brought into the world by my friend. They are not my children; my role was merely to facilitate their existence through this gift.

The crucial part now is that when these babies arrive, they’ll know just how much love surrounded them before they even drew their first breath.
