As I prepare to attend my 30-year high school reunion, I reflect on the differences between this event and my experience at the 10-year reunion. Back then, social media was not a part of our lives. I had no idea who would attend or how they’d changed. Recently married and working on a TV show that hadn’t yet aired, I felt the anxiety of being judged by my former classmates. Their polite smiles belied a deeper suspicion: “He’s still figuring it out,” they might have thought.
The 10-year mark can feel too close to high school to truly reconnect. We were all still striving for success, and it created an undercurrent of tension. Each conversation felt tinged with insecurity as we compared achievements, always afraid of being outshone by our peers. That weekend was uncomfortable, leaving me vowing never to attend another reunion.
Fast forward to now, and I find myself looking forward to the 30-year event. I come as a divorced man with a varied career path that includes both triumphs and setbacks. Most importantly, I’ve reached a stage in life where I’m confident in who I am. The pressure to impress is gone, allowing for genuine connections. Social media has helped us all stay updated on each other’s lives, and we’ve collectively aged.
No longer am I the class clown, and the cheerleader from our youth has embraced her role as a confident and accomplished woman. The former jock has moved on from his glory days, enjoying success in his own right. We’ve all grown into our adult selves, shedding the youthful identities that once defined us. At the 10-year reunion, we were still discovering ourselves, while at 30 years, we can celebrate who we have become.
Of course, I still plan to hit the gym before the reunion—there’s no way I want to show up with a spare tire! Looks like I’ll need to part with all that Easter candy first.
In summary, the 30-year reunion is a more relaxed and authentic experience than the 10-year. It allows us to connect as the people we’ve become, free of the insecurities that plagued our earlier encounters.
