Last summer, my five-year-old son, along with his kindergarten pals, decided to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure right in our downtown Chicago neighborhood. Their plan was simple yet charming: offer free lemonade while welcoming donations.
After I repeatedly turned down his pleas for using the “lemonade funds” for Pokémon cards, my son, Hudson, agreed to donate the proceeds to the National Child Advocacy Center, a dedicated organization championing the rights of children and families. He felt a sense of joy about supporting other kids in need.
As the days passed, we gathered supplies and enlisted enthusiastic helpers. On the day of the stand, Hudson sprang out of bed, full of excitement. Once breakfast was over, we carted our supplies down the street, and before we knew it, we were open for business.
Hudson’s first customer was his friend Nora, who stood out with her sparkly blue backpack. Before even greeting us, she confidently emptied her glittery pouch into the donation box. “That’s all I have!” she beamed, as the coins tumbled in. “Lemonade, lemonade, get your free lemonade!” she shouted. Nora’s mom smiled at me and noted that was indeed all she had—$5.43.
After a busy day of serving lemonade, we sat down to tally the donations. To my astonishment, we collected $437.52! Hudson, either blissfully naïve or genuinely optimistic about humanity, treated it as just another ordinary day.
As I sifted through the coins, I thought of Nora and her innocent generosity. I labeled a plastic bag “Nora’s Change” and chuckled at how simply she understood the act of giving—she knew someone else could use her coins more than she could.
The next morning, I eagerly contacted the Executive Director of the National Child Advocacy Center to share our success. She and her team were genuinely moved by the children’s efforts. I quickly donated $437.52 online, which was far easier than writing a check.
Now, I found myself with a hefty stack of cash, as most of our profits came in the form of dollar bills. I counted 256 bills wrapped in a rubber band and contemplated what to do with this suspicious lump of cash. Should I deposit it in the bank? At that moment, the money wasn’t going to change my life, nor was it essential.
I placed it on the counter next to Nora’s bag of change and felt inspired. I decided to use the money in a way that mirrored Nora’s giving spirit—freely and without judgment. I tucked the cash into my purse and went on with my day.
That morning marked the beginning of several months filled with opportunities to give generously. Here are some highlights:
- I filled a gas can for a man stranded without gas, and he looked me in the eye and said, “Thank you, God bless you.”
- I treated a mother behind me in line to coffee and breakfast, and she promised to “pay it forward.”
- I bought an umbrella for an elderly man caught in the rain, and although he seemed puzzled by my kindness, his gratitude was evident.
- I left generous tips for Uber drivers, realizing this was a great way to earn a five-star rating.
I also engaged in some anonymous acts of kindness that only the recipients would remember. The rewards were rich—smiles, heartfelt thanks, hugs from strangers, and meaningful conversations that I never would have experienced without this newfound perspective.
This morning, I gave away my last dollar bill and felt a tinge of sadness. Yet I realized that giving—just like Nora had shown—often transcends the money itself; it’s about the intention behind it. By sharing those dollar bills, I reminded others that we can look out for one another, fostering a sense of community that doesn’t rely solely on financial resources.
As for Nora’s change, I haven’t decided yet what to do with it. For now, it will remain in its plastic bag as a source of inspiration. I know that soon, it will be time to pass it on, and I’ll joyfully share its contents, reminding myself of the true essence of giving.
I glanced at the bag labeled “Nora’s Change” and smiled. That simple act of kindness had sparked a much deeper change within me.
