It Shouldn’t Require a Major Blunder to Stand Up for the LGBTQIA+ Community

The Hallmark Channel recently succumbed to the outcry from anti-LGBTQIA+ groups, but it certainly won’t be the last organization to cave. The loudest voices often carry negativity, making them hard to ignore. This time, the uproar centered around a Zola commercial featuring a same-sex couple. After pressure from One Million Moms, Hallmark decided to pull the ad, a move that many found disappointing.

In the aftermath, pro-LGBTQIA+ advocates voiced their concerns, and thankfully, Hallmark reinstated the ad. CEO Mike Perry acknowledged the mistake, stating that the Crown Media team had been “agonizing” over their decision and recognized the hurt it had caused. This incident is just one of many that illustrate the ongoing struggle of marginalized voices. As a queer, nonbinary individual, I witness this bias daily. While I strive for change, I can’t afford to be angry all the time. Real change requires allies who act consistently, not just in response to outrage.

I am grateful for everyone who raised their voice and signed petitions to challenge Hallmark’s decision. However, I urge allies to reflect on their role. Being an ally goes beyond just fixing problems; it demands daily actions to foster inclusion and combat discrimination.

While we might not be able to eliminate all hate or educate those who refuse to learn, we can work towards a world that is safer and more accepting for all. Here are some actionable steps allies can take:

Be Visible

People like me are always looking for safe spaces and accepting individuals. It’s crucial to show your support visibly. Share stories on social media that advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. Do you have Safe Space stickers in your workplace? Do you wear pronoun pins or include pronouns in your email signature? If you do, that’s a great start, but don’t stop there.

Be Vocal

If you’re making silent efforts to support the community, are you encouraging others to follow suit? Sharing your pronouns can spark essential conversations and create a more inclusive environment. This simple act shows respect for those who might not fit traditional gender norms. Also, don’t hesitate to challenge narrow-minded opinions from friends or family. Addressing hurtful comments doesn’t have to be confrontational, but it’s necessary to set boundaries against intolerance.

Be Proactive

Consider donating time or resources to LGBTQIA+ organizations, such as local pride centers or advocacy groups. Advocate for inclusive literature in schools and libraries, and push for LGBTQIA+ training in workplaces. Ensure that companies provide protections and benefits for queer employees.

Be a Voter

Voting isn’t just a political action; it’s a means of ensuring safety and securing rights for all. Set aside party affiliations and prioritize humanity when casting your ballot. Encourage others in your circle to do the same. Offer assistance to those who may struggle to vote, as their voices need to be amplified.

Be Aware

Many people overlook the everyday microaggressions and biases faced by queer individuals. Stay informed about these challenges by reading stories from the community or watching films that promote understanding and empathy. While it’s entirely valid to feel outraged by injustices, meaningful change requires consistent action, not just periodic petitions.

It might be easy to criticize from behind a screen, but real change happens through face-to-face interactions. A simple gesture, like displaying a rainbow sticker or wearing a pronoun pin, can challenge bigotry daily. Promote LGBTQIA+ inclusion everywhere you go, not just during moments of outrage.

In summary, being an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community involves more than just reacting to injustice; it requires consistent, proactive efforts to promote visibility, vocal support, and awareness. Let’s strive for a world where allyship is a daily practice rather than a reactionary response.
