Dear God, A Prayer for Parents at the End of the School Year

Dear Lord,

As we approach the end of another school year, we ask for your grace to guide us through the chaos. Help us escape the daily grind of packing lunches that are anything but appetizing and remind us to check those backpacks before they hit the floor. Help us navigate the twilight hours when the sun shines longer than our children’s bedtime, yet somehow, the bus still shows up at dawn.

Carry us through the whirlwind of May—filled with endless special events, programs, and projects. Grant us the perspective to see these moments as joyful, rather than stressful, and help us remember that they are designed for celebration, not to test our limits.

Give us the endurance to be present at baseball games, choir recitals, award ceremonies, and soccer matches. Let our kids feel the love that drives us to endure those uncomfortable bleacher seats, even if we seem distracted by our phones. Our eyes may be weary from witnessing their growth this year, but our applause is sincere.

Lord, keep us from giving up entirely and resorting to old Halloween candy as a lunch staple. Help us elevate our standards, if only to pre-packaged yogurt, applesauce, and the occasional indulgent Little Debbie treat.

In those moments when our patience wears thin, as we assist with yet another history timeline, math worksheet, or book report, remind us that teachers are on the other side of the desk grading these assignments too. May we extend a prayer to them as we ask for a third permission slip for the end-of-year field trip, having misplaced the first two. And when we forget pajama day, or when our children show up in ill-fitting clothes because we’re just scraping by until summer, grant us grace.

Please forgive our shortcomings, knowing they come from a place of utter exhaustion.

We ask that sports jerseys and overdue library books appear when we need them. Let the clean socks and underwear multiply like the loaves and fishes. And may we all agree that frozen pizza and waffles for dinner five nights a week can be a perfectly reasonable meal plan, despite its lack of variety.

Most importantly, dear Lord, help us get through May without losing our minds, our children, or our will to carry on. Because, truthfully, all three are hanging in the balance tonight.

Amen.
