One of the most alarming moments of my life occurred when my infant son fell ill with the flu. As a parent who strictly adheres to vaccination schedules, I was devastated that he couldn’t receive a flu shot due to his age. Despite my efforts and those of everyone around him to stay healthy, he became unwell.

For days, he was lethargic and visibly uncomfortable. I found it impossible to sleep, constantly worried about his rising temperature or his breathing. It was a harrowing time.

About a year later, I took him to the pediatrician for a nagging cough. It was so persistent that he hardly slept at night, leaving him drained during the day. The doctor couldn’t diagnose asthma yet because he was still so young, but suggested a nebulizer that helped clear his airways.

Those early parenting years taught me invaluable lessons about health; I had previously taken my good health for granted. In my twenties, I lived in a beautiful top-floor apartment that was perpetually dusty. Although I tried to keep it clean for guests with allergies, I never prioritized it for myself.

Fast forward two decades, and I married someone with a dust allergy, while my own skin became increasingly sensitive—almost to the point of feeling allergic to air. My son mirrors my daughter’s past breathing troubles, and the memory of her flu ordeal still lingers.

At this stage, I’m willing to explore any options to keep my family in good health. While I’m a firm believer in vaccinations, I also appreciate natural remedies. After trying various health trends, I realized I had overlooked a classic recommendation: the humidifier.

When my daughter first faced respiratory issues, her pediatrician recommended a humidifier to increase moisture in the air, and it worked wonders. It significantly improved her sleep and eased her coughing. After we moved, I neglected to set it up again, forgetting its many benefits until recently.

Humidifiers are like the unsung heroes of home appliances. While it’s common knowledge they add moisture to the air making breathing easier, they have numerous other benefits that often go unnoticed. For instance, did you know that the flu virus thrives in dry air? A study revealed that after 24 hours in humid air, 100% of the flu virus is neutralized, while 60% remains active in dry conditions. This means our cozy, heated homes during winter might be contributing to flu season!

This fact alone should prompt you to consider placing a humidifier in every room. If that doesn’t convince you, consider my experience after moving to California, where the dry air wreaked havoc on my skin. Despite trying numerous expensive creams and staying hydrated, I struggled with dryness until I reintroduced the humidifier into my routine. Within days, my skin felt more comfortable and less tight.

Humidifiers also benefit those who snore, as they help retain warmth in the air, reducing the workload on your heater during colder months. In places with recycled air, like offices and hospitals, they can alleviate symptoms of “sick building syndrome,” including headaches and fatigue. They also alleviate allergy symptoms.

In a world saturated with quick-fix health solutions, humidifiers stand out as a low-risk option. Simply fill it with water, plug it in, and see if it makes a difference for you. Best case? You’ll have glowing skin and a quieter partner. At the very least, your plants will thrive in the more humid environment!
