If You’re Concerned About Homelessness, Here’s How You Can Make a Difference

Everyone has a cause that resonates deeply with them. For my son, Alex, that cause is homelessness. Every time we venture into the city, he insists on giving money to almost everyone he encounters. The thought of someone being without a home is incomprehensible to him, and it truly affects him.

Not long ago, we discussed simple ways to impact the world positively, to take action when faced with challenges instead of simply complaining about them. I can’t recall the exact details of our conversation, but eventually, Alex decided he wanted to put together backpacks to distribute to those experiencing homelessness.

As often happens, several months passed without any progress on the idea. I assumed he had forgotten, and frankly, I was unsure how to bring his concept to life. However, his concern lingered. Each time he spotted someone in need, an urgent expression would cross his face, as if he felt a calling to help. During a recent trip to the city, he asked, “When are we going to make those backpacks?”

We talked more about his idea and what it could look like. He envisioned backpacks filled with essentials: water, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and granola bars. I suggested we could include a note with information about nearby shelters. He even crafted a handwritten card for each bag. I ordered backpacks online that read “You Are Loved” and stocked up on supplies in bulk (thank you, Amazon!).

Last week, we assembled 50 backpacks to distribute to individuals on the streets. Any extras would be donated to a local homeless shelter to ensure that those in need know they are valued.

Our kids are incredible, brimming with compassion and creativity. The issue of homelessness weighs heavily on many young hearts, just as it does on adults. Everyone deserves a place to call home and food to eat, yet the problem can often seem insurmountable. We might retreat into our comfortable lives, donning blinders to the overwhelming nature of the issue.

Sure, we donate occasionally, but it often takes our children urging us to step outside of our comfort zones to effect real change—even if it’s for just one person for a fleeting moment. I will never forget the joy on a woman’s face when my younger son, Liam, handed her a backpack.

If homelessness resonates with you as well, consider these ways to help alongside your children:

1. Donate on Special Occasions.

When Liam turned 7, he wanted a big birthday bash. Although I’m not typically one for extravagant parties, I agreed—with the stipulation that he forego gifts. Instead, he could ask guests to donate to a cause he cared about. After checking with the local homeless shelter about their specific needs, Liam requested donations of socks, umbrellas, and ponchos. Instead of receiving gifts, he was able to deliver numerous backpacks filled with essentials to those in need, creating a win-win situation.

2. Contribute Food to Local Shelters.

Many homeless shelters have rotating locations throughout the community, offering overnight stays and hot meals. While children may not be able to volunteer directly, they can assist in purchasing or preparing food for a shelter. A quick online search will show you the Pads sites in your area and their specific needs.

3. Educate Yourself and Others.

Familiarize yourself with the homeless situation in your community. Advocate for mental health services, affordable housing initiatives, and increased minimum wage. When you understand the issues surrounding homelessness, consider writing letters to your elected officials with your children to promote positive change. 4. Spend Time with Homeless Youth.

Reach out to local shelters to inquire about volunteer opportunities, especially those focused on youth.

5. Practice Empathy and Kindness.

Even if you don’t have money to give, you can still show compassion. Make eye contact with those you pass on the street, offer a simple greeting, or express well wishes. Everyone deserves human decency, and we are all part of the same community.

In summary, taking small steps can lead to significant change. Whether through donations, food contributions, or simply showing kindness, every effort counts in making the world a better place for those in need.
