Curious if you’re paying your babysitter too much or too little? Urbansitter has gathered data to help you figure it out. In their eighth annual survey, they polled 28,000 families across the United States, providing insights on average babysitting rates, frequency of hire, and other fascinating statistics.
To start, Urbansitter created a detailed map showing hourly rates by city. On average, parents spend around $16.75 per hour for one child and $19.26 for two children. San Francisco tops the list as the most expensive city, with rates averaging $18.75 for one child and $21.30 for two. In contrast, Las Vegas offers the lowest rates, at $11.63 for one child and $14.71 for two. New York City comes in close to San Francisco, with babysitters earning about $20.85 per hour.
When considering annual childcare expenses, about 42 percent of parents report spending between $10,000 and $30,000 per child, with a small fraction (4 percent) exceeding $40,000.
Summer brings a surge in babysitting needs, with 59 percent of parents planning to spend over $1,000 on childcare during the break. A mere 2 percent anticipate expenses of more than $10,000 during these warmer months.
Examining the frequency of babysitter hires, 58 percent of parents employ a sitter at least once a month, while 15 percent do so more than once weekly.
So, how does babysitting play into parents’ desires for some time away from home? It’s significant! Approximately 40 percent of respondents hire childcare to enjoy “adult time away from the kids,” while another 40 percent do so to reconnect with their partner. Other motivations include relaxation, entertainment, and romance—each valid reasons for needing a break.
Date nights are particularly popular, especially during anniversaries, but birthdays, New Year’s Eve, and Valentine’s Day also see high demand for babysitters. Interestingly, many parents prefer to secure their favorite sitters over dining at their favorite restaurants, emphasizing the value of great babysitters.
