Mother’s Day—a day filled with anticipation for many women, especially new moms—but also a source of anxiety for many dads. What can a father possibly give to articulate the incredible role a mother plays in the life cycle? How can he choose a gift that equates to the miracle of creating life and then nurturing that tiny human into a thriving individual? It’s a tall order.
Unfortunately, new dads often default to the traditional gifts seen in commercials, where the actress playing the mom beams with joy over flowers, chocolates, stuffed animals, heart pendants, or coffee mugs. Alternatively, some dads think involving the kids in a breakfast-in-bed surprise is the ideal way to express their appreciation for mom. But let’s be real—this often leads to a chaotic morning filled with burnt toast and children squabbling over pancake toppings.
Instead of a serene start to the day, mom wakes up to the scent of charred bread and a messy kitchen, all while trying to enjoy the sweet gesture of being served breakfast. With syrup spilled on the comforter and a kitchen resembling a disaster zone, the idea of breakfast in bed quickly loses its charm.
Brunch may seem like a picturesque way to celebrate, with everyone dressed up and enjoying a leisurely meal, but that’s rarely the reality. Instead, it often involves wrestling kids into nice clothes, battling crowds, and managing meltdowns before you can even order drinks. The effort to capture a perfect family photo often turns into a comedic disaster.
The Truth Moms Want to Share
Here’s the truth that many moms may hesitate to share: what we really want for Mother’s Day is a break from motherhood. Yep, you heard that right. We cherish our kids and partners, but after 364 days of giving our all, we yearn for a day off.
What do we desire? Sleep. Endless, uninterrupted sleep. Maybe even a couple of naps. We crave a day without cooking, cleaning, or mediating sibling squabbles. We want to escape to our favorite shop, indulge in a spa day, or savor a moment curled up with a good book. We want the luxury of wandering through Target without a care in the world, free from deadlines and responsibilities.
At the end of the day, we want to return home just in time to give our children a gentle kiss goodnight, blissfully avoiding the bedtime chaos.
In fact, I surveyed 80 mothers with young children, and the most common response was a longing for sleep. Following that, pampering and a nice dinner out with their partner rounded out the top three wishes.
Advice for New Dads
So, to all the new dads out there stressed about what to get their queens for Mother’s Day: heed this advice—bypass the flowers. What moms truly desire is an anti-Mother’s Day experience. Ignore your instincts and instead provide the oasis of a quiet bedroom, an uninterrupted shower, and a lovely dinner out. We need a day devoted to mom, free from the exhausting demands of daily life.
