I’ve never grasped the appeal of cold showers. Who in their right mind would willingly subject themselves to that? When I step into the shower, I crank the heat high enough to practically steam the wallpaper off the walls. I’m pretty much perpetually in a state of “medium rare” because I chase warmth like it’s the holy grail.
So, when I stumbled upon the concept of ice bath facials, I was horrified. But being either adventurous or perhaps a tad masochistic (maybe both), I decided to dive into this chilly endeavor and share my experience. You’re welcome!
What is an Ice Bath Facial?
An ice bath facial is just what it sounds like: a facial using ice water. You grab a large bowl and fill it with ice and cold water. Some enthusiasts choose to splash their faces a specific number of times, with the iconic Joan Crawford reportedly splashing her visage 25 times each wash. Others, like me, opt to fully dunk their faces in the bowl. The idea is that the icy water constricts the facial capillaries, reducing puffiness and leaving one looking bright and refreshed.
After trying this myself, I can affirm it does make you appear more awake—mostly because I’ve never witnessed someone who’s just woken up scream and curse so loudly at 6 AM.
The Experience
To minimize the mess in my bathroom, I decided to fully submerge my face. I thought it would be quicker, and hey, I wasn’t dunking my entire body. I pulled my hair back, secured my bangs with a headband, laid out my towel, and prepared for the plunge.
Oh, but I forgot—ice water is excruciatingly cold. I intended to keep my head submerged for just a few seconds, but instead, I resembled one of those old water-drinking birds you’d see on desks in Looney Tunes. My face went in and immediately shot back out, because ice water and skin are not a pleasant combo.
After some mental pep talks convincing myself this wasn’t a terrible idea, I managed to plunge my face into the icy abyss again, this time holding it there for a few seconds. Emerging from the bowl and patting dry, I glanced in the mirror.
My face certainly looked awake, but more like it had just encountered a ghost than a refreshing splash. Sure, my makeup went on smoothly after, and my skin felt softer with a brighter complexion. But while looking slightly furious from the cold wasn’t the worst look for me, I doubt I’ll be incorporating ice bath facials into my beauty routine anytime soon. If I’m seeking discomfort in my skincare, I’d rather stick to microneedling or acid peels. However, if I wake up feeling overly puffy or exhausted, dunking my face in ice water might not be the worst option.
Considerations
That said, I wouldn’t recommend making this a regular habit. Extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, can be tough on the skin. Frequent exposure to freezing water can lead to broken capillaries, resulting in red spots that can be quite stubborn. Ideally, limit ice bath facials to just a couple of times a week.
Interestingly, this extreme chilling experience may have solved my coffee aversion. Flash-freezing my face in the morning felt akin to injecting caffeine directly into my eyeballs—so I might just be onto something here!

Summary
In my exploration of ice bath facials, I found that while the experience was shocking and invigorating, it didn’t seamlessly fit into my beauty regimen. While it does offer a brief boost in alertness and skin brightness, the potential risks of frequent use are something to consider. If you’re looking for ways to wake up your skin without the chill, alternative methods might be more suitable.
