Hello there! I’ve invented a new holiday, and I want you to join in the celebration. Here’s a little poem I penned, titled “The Ultimate Day of Relaxation,” to share the joy:
You’ve cooked, you’ve cleaned, and you’ve juggled it all
To make the season shine bright.
Now? You’re worn out, feeling frazzled about,
Drowning in what should bring delight.
You need some rest, a drink, and maybe some cake,
A little mindless TV would be great.
Let the family feast on leftovers galore,
While you enjoy some peace – isn’t that fate?
“New toys were unwrapped just yesterday!”
“No cooking today, come what may!”
The car keys stay tucked in your bag.
No shower for you, just comfy pajamas, it’s true,
Your hair can be limp, and your spirit can lag.
It’s December 26, time for your one-day fix
Of reigning supreme on the couch.
The remote is all yours; as the wine pours,
You’ve truly earned this day off, without doubt!
Ladies, mark your calendars: Moms’ Day Off is December 26! Are you ready for it?
I’ve been celebrating—or at least attempting to celebrate—Moms’ Day Off on this date for about eight years. Some years, things don’t quite pan out due to life’s unpredictability, but I give it my best shot.
This personal holiday emerged after I realized that from December 22 to December 25, I barely sat down, and by the time the 26th rolled around, I was utterly spent. The first time I tried to embrace Moms’ Day Off, I had a toddler and a preschooler (plus a husband who seemed to be hiding somewhere in the house). It took me an astonishing four and a half hours to watch Julie & Julia, but it remains one of the best days of my life. To this day, I have a Pavlovian response to that film; when it’s on, I instinctively search for my red wine.
My kids have come to detest this day. Full disclosure: It likely doesn’t help that I play the queen card all day. “Feeling like watching something on TV? Oops! Sorry! It’s Moms’ Day Off!” I can’t help but chuckle when I think about it.
Want to join in? Here are the guidelines:
- Mom is the Supreme Ruler of the remote from dawn until bedtime (or later, as napping on the couch is highly encouraged).
- The car remains parked in the driveway.
- Wine starts flowing at 11:30 a.m. (or even 11 a.m. if you’re feeling bold).
- No new meals will be prepared. It’s all about leftovers or whatever is available for self-service. (You can heat things up for the little ones if absolutely necessary, but try to resist.)
- Pajamas are mandatory! (One year, I even showed up to a family event in my PJs and slippers.)
- Naps are a must. Nap time all around!
- Anyone who isn’t mom is prohibited from complaining about anything. (This rule often gets ignored, but it’s worth a shot.)
Now, about dads: can they partake too? I typically lean towards inclusivity, but I’m hesitant to give a full endorsement. If you’re a dad, ask yourself: Have you actually helped out with holiday preparations? If you think you did, think again! The key is to show initiative rather than act like you just landed on this planet and have no clue about holiday duties. Otherwise, if you settle into the couch on Moms’ Day Off, I guarantee your partner might start dreaming of ways to smother you with a pillow. And yes, if a child yells “Mom!” on December 26, just translate that to “Dad!”
Happy Holidays!

Summary:
December 26 is designated as Moms’ Day Off, a time for mothers to kick back and enjoy a well-deserved break after the holiday hustle. With specific rules in place, this day is all about relaxation, leftovers, and reclaiming the couch. Parents are encouraged to join in, but dads should be proactive in helping out to avoid being sidelined on this special day.
