One of the most significant individuals in my life is just 7 years old. I’ve known her since she was a tiny bundle in her mother’s belly. She affectionately calls me her big brother, a title I cherish and take quite seriously. We embark on adventures to the zoo, indulge in ice cream outings, and catch movies together. I load her up with sugar and then send her back to her parents (I’m sure they appreciate it!).
Her family and I share a meaningful bond, and I hope I hold a special place in their hearts as well. Over the years, she has keenly noticed that I am perpetually single and has taken it upon herself to “fix” that.
This little one has appointed herself as the ultimate advisor in my love life, offering unsolicited yet invaluable insights into dating. Her advice is often hilarious and way more useful than the misguided suggestions I get from my adult friends. Since she was 4, I’ve been jotting down her wise words. While some people spend a fortune on life coaches, I simply stroll through the park with this delightful 7-year-old, who puts me in my place every time.
Here are some of her best nuggets of wisdom:
-
Kid: Always apologize.
Me: But what if I didn’t do anything wrong?
Kid: Hmm. You did something. Just start with “I’m sorry.” It’ll make things easier—trust me! - Kid: Pay attention to her, not your job! You’re dating her, not your career!
- Kid: Find someone who shares your interests so you can enjoy them together.
-
Kid: Are you planning to marry her?!
Me: I’m not sure. Should I?
Kid: No! I don’t want her as my sister! She’s mean to you. You shouldn’t love someone who’s mean. (Her insight here was remarkable; I hadn’t realized how toxic that relationship had become.) -
Kid: You need to find someone to love.
Me: Why?
Kid: Because everyone needs somebody!
Me: How do I know whom to love?
Kid: Love someone because they’re special, okay?
Me: Okay! -
Kid: Why don’t you have a girlfriend?!
Me: I dunno. What’s your take?
Kid: (looking me over) Maybe because you like Star Wars and they don’t.
Me: So, The Force is weak with them?
Kid: (rolls eyes) What am I going to do with you? -
Kid: You need a girlfriend!
Me: Why?
Kid: Because you don’t have one, silly! -
Kid: I know you might not get married, but if you did, I’d have a sister-in-law, right?
Me: Who said I wouldn’t get married?!
Kid: You did! Answer my question!
Me: Yes, you’d have a sister-in-law.
Kid: (groans) But I want a brother-in-law. Can you marry a boy instead? -
Me: How do I know which emojis to send or what she means?
Kid: Always show them to me; I’ll know. -
Kid: Are you dating the girl who gave me that lemon bar?
Me: You mean Lisa?
Kid: Yeah, are you dating her?
Me: No, she’s just a friend.
Kid: You should marry Lisa. She loves you, and you love her. Plus, she’s nice!
Me: Is that so?
Kid: Yep! Tell her you love her and marry her! Or you’ll miss your chance.
This little one offers me dating advice every time we meet, and she frequently brings up Lisa. While she may be a tad enthusiastic about the idea of me marrying Lisa (likely due to that unforgettable lemon bar), she has a point. I often let great opportunities pass me by because fear holds me back from expressing my feelings. When I have a crush, I shy away from risking vulnerability or losing a friendship.
Maybe this 7-year-old is onto something. Perhaps I should take more chances—not just in love, but in life. After all, progress often requires a leap or two.
