In 2012, when tragedy struck an elementary school in Connecticut and claimed 26 lives, I found myself with a first grader of my own. Allowing him to step out the door and head to school the next day required every bit of strength I could muster, but I pushed through.

Then came the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, claiming another 32 lives. Would I ever be able to send my child off to college? I did, just like countless other mothers do every year, standing strong at dormitory curbs, boot camps, and police academies. We release them into the vast, unpredictable world, all while wearing our brave faces.
My brave smile is beyond exhausted. It’s weathered and worn, filled with anxious thoughts, yet always ready. Although it becomes increasingly challenging to maintain each day, it’s more essential than ever. I can’t keep my kids cocooned under my watchful eye; I can’t succumb to the relentless news of calamity and despair. I cannot wrap myself in a blanket of “what ifs” and anxiety. It’s absurd to think I can promise my children a future that is completely safe and happy. What I can promise, however, is that I will continue to wear my brave face for them, so that when they step out each day, it’s the last thing they see.
Perhaps, just perhaps, they will venture into the world remembering what courage looks like and understand that life is meant to be lived, not hidden away.
