I truly enjoy a clean and organized home. Ideally, I’d love for my space to resemble one of those stunning reveals from a popular renovation show. However, maintaining a picture-perfect home isn’t realistic for my family.
You see, I have three kids—three vibrant, imaginative, and somewhat messy children who seem oblivious to the chaos around them. As a homeschooling family, our house often becomes a hub of creative activities that don’t always lend themselves to tidiness. Add to that a constant stream of friends coming over, and you can imagine how quickly things can get cluttered.
Both my partner and I work from home, which is a blessing, but it also means our space gets a serious workout. If I aimed to keep everything spotless, I’d drive myself absolutely bonkers. Plus, if I waited until my home was tidy before inviting friends over, I’d never have anyone visit!
Having friends over is essential to me. So, my definition of a “company-ready” home is quite different from what you might expect. It doesn’t mean that the coffee table is cleared, the dining room is spotless, or that there are no dishes piled up in the sink. It also doesn’t mean that shoes aren’t scattered or that laundry baskets are hidden from view.
If I believed my home had to be immaculate for guests to come over, I’d end up feeling isolated. While I dream of inviting people into a pristine setting, I refuse to stress myself out trying to achieve that. I won’t put my life on hold or create unnecessary tension because my home is a lived-in space.
So, I’ve simply redefined what being “company-ready” means for us. It means I’m ready for visitors, no matter the state of the house. If I know someone is coming over, I’ll tidy up a bit out of courtesy, but I don’t panic if they see our mess. This is our reality—our authentic, unfiltered life. If you want to know us, this is who we are. Our home is warm and inviting, even if it’s not always neat and tidy.
It’s a place where kids immerse themselves in imaginative play, sometimes leaving a trail of toys behind. It’s where I juggle work deadlines and occasionally let the dishes pile up. It’s a space filled with laughter and snacks, where crumbs may linger longer than I’d prefer.
It’s also a home where other kids feel comfortable and welcomed. When other parents visit, they often express relief that their homes aren’t the only ones that look like this sometimes. We embrace life in all its messy, imperfect glory.
While a spotless home is a commendable goal, it’s just not feasible for us at this stage of family life. I’m not willing to expend unnecessary energy or stress over it. There are already enough challenges to navigate.
Perhaps one day, my notion of a company-ready home will align more closely with those immaculate spaces I see on TV. But for now, you’ll find me navigating piles of Legos and mismatched shoes, all while keeping the welcome mat out.
