Who doesn’t love a fabulous celebration? Ashley Green, the gorgeous supermodel and advocate for body positivity, certainly enjoys them. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend last year’s Met Gala, the pinnacle of fashion events, due to designers not willing to dress her.
This annual gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, showcasing an array of stars adorned in exquisite garments. However, many of these creations are only available in sizes 0 or 2, which is why Green was left out of this glamorous affair. “I couldn’t find a designer who would dress me,” she explained to Fashion Insider. “You can’t just waltz in wearing jeans and a t-shirt.” Hence, she chose to stay home instead.
It’s quite absurd that designers lack options beyond a size 2. The average American woman wears a size 16, and with curvy models gaining recognition in the fashion world, it would seem that at least a few designers could provide something for Green. After all, they are in the business of making clothes, so creating a larger size shouldn’t be a foreign concept. Green mentioned that she didn’t have the necessary connections to ensure a custom gown would be ready in time.
This issue isn’t new for Green. In a past edition of Vogue, editor Lisa Monroe discussed the challenges faced while trying to secure designer outfits for the model. Eventually, Monroe collaborated with a brand to provide Green with clothing for the shoot. “They were thrilled to dress someone who doesn’t fit the standard model mold, but sadly, many fashion houses outright refused to lend us their pieces,” Monroe noted.
On a brighter note, this year has been kinder to Green. She made a stunning entrance at the Met Gala, donning a couture gown from H&M. The red tulle and bustier neckline didn’t go unnoticed, with one of the fashion queens, Rihanna, complimenting her look. “Rihanna told me I looked ‘hot as ever,’” Green shared. “I was speechless and just thought, ‘You slay every Met, Rihanna!’” While Rihanna continues to reign supreme at the Met Ball, Green is reminding everyone that beauty comes in all sizes.

In summary, Ashley Green’s absence from last year’s Met Gala highlights the ongoing challenges faced by plus-size models in the fashion industry. Despite this setback, she made a triumphant return this year, reminding us all that beauty is diverse and should be celebrated in every form.
