When it comes to raising kids, I’m not one to subscribe to traditional gender roles or outdated ideas. It’s 2023! Parenting is a shared responsibility, a true partnership where both moms and dads need to put in equal effort to succeed. That being said, my partner definitely excels in some areas, and it has nothing to do with gender. (Unless you count being sick—women totally dominate there.) Here are five reasons why my partner outshines me in parenting:
1. Her Body Is a Marvel
Let’s face it, my partner’s body is designed for nurturing. If I tried to carry a baby, it would be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole; it just wouldn’t work! I know, I know, babies don’t actually grow in the stomach, but I lack the necessary anatomy to make it happen. So, she wins this round by default!
2. She Has an Eagle Eye for Messes
My partner possesses an uncanny ability to spot messes before they even happen. She can locate hidden treasures of Play-Doh and mac and cheese faster than I can find my keys. It’s like living with a psychic who constantly alerts me about the impending chaos, all while managing to slide coasters or paper towels under my son’s bowl of SpaghettiOs before disaster strikes. If only she could predict when I’ll forget to clean up after myself!
3. She’s a Snuggling Champion
I have no idea what makes her such a great cuddler, but my son will choose her over me any day. He snuggles with her on the couch, in bed, and even at the dinner table. When I try to join in, I might as well be a stranger; he hisses at me like I’m an unwanted guest at a cat convention. I guess I’ll have to work on my cuddling skills!
4. Her Multitasking Skills Are Legendary
She can whip up dinner, admire our son’s less-than-stellar drawings, and select his outfit for picture day—all while planning our next family vacation and reminding me to help out without losing her mind. I’m still mastering the art of cooking and keeping up with SportsCenter, but she effortlessly juggles it all.
5. Her Patience Is Unmatched
While I tend to lose my cool at the slightest provocation, my partner manages to keep her voice calm and collected. She doesn’t resort to time-outs as quickly as I do, and she certainly doesn’t bolt to the bar to escape the chaos of parenting as quickly as I might on a tough day. When she finally reaches her limit, you better watch out! But her threshold is high, and she rarely gets there, unlike me, who operates in a constant state of stress. I could learn a thing or two from her patience—especially when my son decides to use our expensive gadgets as target practice!
Neither of us is perfect, but she’s definitely winning at this parenting game. To be fair, she doesn’t have to deal with someone constantly reminding her how great she is at everything! I’ll be back with my own list of parenting wins—if I can think of any beyond my impressive ability to pour a drink.
