Real Talk: My Experience with LipSense—Surprisingly Positive

A close friend of mine recently ventured into the world of LipSense sales (surprise!), and she added me to her Facebook group. As a loyal friend, I thought I’d check it out.

Makeup isn’t typically my thing; I lean towards lip gloss and balm. Lipstick often feels too dramatic for my taste, and I generally stick to the most sheer or nude shades available. So, when I first heard about LipSense, I wasn’t exactly intrigued. And then I saw the starting price: $55. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

That price (for one lip color and a gloss) feels steep for someone with only a passing interest in lipstick. Ultimately, LipSense operates as a multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme, meaning you’ll likely see an influx of posts, photos, and tutorials on your feed. If that’s not your thing, trust me, I get it. Luckily, my friend was chill about it; she invited me over to test it out without any pressure, making me more open to trying it.

The most appealing aspect of LipSense is its smudge-proof formula that stays put until you decide to remove it. If you know a seller, you’ve probably seen those videos where they rub their lips with their fingers, showing that the color doesn’t budge. Those clips can be a bit cringeworthy, but the product really does stick. After that application process, it better not come off!

Now, the application can feel overwhelming initially. You need to apply three layers of color, let each layer dry briefly, and then finish with the gloss. If you accidentally go outside the lines (like I did), you’ll have to buy their special remover, which is just another added cost.

This isn’t a quick-fix solution; I wouldn’t recommend using it in a hurry. It’s not the kind of product you slap on when you’re running late. Instead, it requires a deliberate commitment since taking it off is just as labor-intensive as putting it on. Initially, the color can make your lips feel parched (probably due to its high alcohol content). Some users report a burning sensation, but for me, it merely tingled. The gloss helps alleviate that dryness, although you’ll likely find yourself reapplying it often.

Currently, there are around 36 colors available, and some of the retired shades have even become collector’s items on eBay, fetching ridiculous prices. I’m not quite sure why, but hey, I’ve spent too much on quirky leggings myself, so who am I to judge?

Given my aversion to bright shades, I quickly dismissed about 75% of the colors. However, I managed to find a nude shade that I didn’t mind. Finding the right nude can be a challenge for those with darker skin tones, as many can look chalky. I found “Bella,” the brand’s best-seller, to be decent. It would have been perfect if it were slightly darker. Still, I was persuaded to experiment with other colors. I only agreed to try them if I could remove them immediately afterward.

“Mauve Ice” was nice but too frosty for my complexion, so we mixed it with “Purple Reign,” their boldest shade. It’s an eye-catching purple, and while I generally shy away from vibrant colors, it didn’t look as catastrophic as I feared. Instead of appearing as if I’d been in a fight, I looked more like I had just enjoyed a grape lollipop (yikes). It wasn’t awful, but I was ready to reach for that remover as soon as the photo was taken.

In conclusion, while I won’t be rushing to purchase LipSense anytime soon—mainly due to the complicated application process and hefty price tag—it’s not a bad product. I still firmly identify with the “Team No Lipstick” camp, but I appreciate that my friend took the time to guide me through it without any high-pressure tactics. It may be a while before I consider investing in a $55 lip kit, but I’ll keep searching for my perfect shade.

Summary: My experience with LipSense was surprisingly positive, despite my initial reservations. The product is smudge-proof and requires a careful application process, making it more suitable for those willing to invest time and money. While I remain a fan of lip gloss, I appreciated the opportunity to explore this lipstick alternative without any sales pressure.
