When you receive a prescription for depression from your healthcare provider, they typically provide some insights about the medication’s purpose, its expected benefits, and perhaps a brief mention of potential “mild side effects.” However, it’s concerning how often these side effects are downplayed or not thoroughly explained. From my own experience, many doctors fail to communicate the prevalence of side effects, particularly the more severe ones.
After my initial prescription, I returned to my doctor with some troubling symptoms.
Me: I’ve been experiencing frequent headaches and stomach issues since starting this medication.
Doctor: Yes, that’s unfortunately pretty common.
In that moment, I thought to myself, “This information would have been helpful before I began treatment!” Alongside headaches, drowsiness and fatigue are common complaints. As someone already battling a lack of motivation, this can feel especially disheartening.
Weight gain is another frequent side effect associated with many antidepressants, adding yet another layer to body image issues. Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort can also occur, making it difficult to enjoy simple pleasures like ice cream without fear of nausea.
Moreover, sexual dysfunction is a significant concern, affecting up to 50% of individuals on these medications, as indicated by various studies. For men, this might manifest as erectile dysfunction, while both men and women may struggle with achieving orgasm. This is especially frustrating when you’re already dealing with depression.
Other unusual side effects may include dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, agitation, and the infamous “brain zaps.” This bizarre sensation has only occurred for me while taking SNRIs; it feels like my brain decides to throw a mini electrical storm, radiating shocks throughout my body.
Navigating the complexities of side effects can feel like a cruel version of “Would You Rather?” I feel as though I’ve experienced a wide range of these issues, almost as if I’ve earned a spot in the “Hall of Fame” for side effects. I might jokingly refer to myself as the Babe Ruth of antidepressants, though I certainly don’t want to sign any autographs while dealing with fatigue, nausea, and headaches.
Sometimes, laughter is the only remedy when facing such challenges; crying is something I’ve done enough of in my lifetime. It’s essential to acknowledge the serious aspects of depression and its treatment, as previously discussed in my other writings.
(Editor’s note: Always consult a healthcare professional before starting or stopping any medication.)
