Dear Jessica,
I’m reaching out to you on this poignant day following the executive order that restricts entry for 218 million individuals into our nation. While your children joyfully play in a park, just as you did with your mother, an immigrant herself, I can’t help but wonder—how can you remain silent?
From your luxurious New York apartment, you can catch a glimpse of Lady Liberty. What do the words etched on her pedestal evoke in you?
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
As a mother, a fellow Jewish woman, and a member of our vibrant community, I implore you to reflect on the plea of young Amina, a seven-year-old girl who reached out to your father for help with the children of Syria.
“Can you please save the children and people of Syria? You must do something for the children of Syria because they are like your children and deserve peace like you.”
Today, on the day after Holocaust Remembrance Day, I find myself torn between the comforts of my home in Brooklyn and the historical weight of our ancestry. What will you share with your children about their grandfather’s role in creating barriers for those seeking refuge? How will you explain the stories of their great-grandparents who endured the horrors of the Holocaust? What can you tell them about their great-great-aunt Miriam, who faced tragedy in a time of fear?
I write to you, a fellow New Yorker and Jewish mother, feeling a profound sense of helplessness. As someone so closely connected to the decision-makers, I ask you: is there no action you can take to prevent history from repeating itself?
Thank you for considering my words.
Warm regards,
Rachel Goldstein
